brake light

One of the items I need to fix in my 72 for my out of province inspection is that the mechanic thinks the brake light in the dash should come on when I turn the truck on and when the emergancy brake is on. I know the brake light in my 71 came on when I had a brake problem (low brake fluid) but does not come on when I turn on the truck or put on the emergancy brake.

Watch your dash when you turn on your truck tomorrow, put on the emerg brake and let me know what you see.

Mine never came on in my 67, but the one in the 68 Camaro does.

I was thinking the same thing, was that a Dealer installed option

Looked at my rig, there is no way to activate the light on the dash
from depressing the E-brake pedal, although I am no expert on this

Re: brake light

There is no way of turning on the dash light with the e-brake. Luv is right, however, inspector dude is right, it IS supposed to to come on when cranking... but not when you first turn on the ignition though.
Unplug the little brown wire on the proportioning valve. Hook it to a ground. If your dash light comes on, show inspector dude and tell him there is no bulb check when cranking. You can probably pull this one off since he doesn't know his job and YOU had to go find info.
If the bulb don't come on... troubleshoot untill the bulb does come on.

Re: brake light

To make light come on when emg. brake is on just take a brake light switch, make a bracket, install on emg. brake brace and splice into tan wire from prop. valve.

Thanks Longhorn Man,
Exactly as you described.
Fixed.
Now on to the harder items like body bushings, shock bushings and leaf spring bushings.
The inspector dude has a thing for rubber.

Maybe he is living with the consequences of premature rubber failure and doesn't want you to experience the same thing.

Re: brake light

First off 71SWB, that's too funny. Second, I was just noticing last night how the brake light doesnt' come on when the E brake is on, and yes my E brake works, since it's a stickshift, I need it. The does exactly as Andy said, it comes on when the truck is cranking, as well as the temp light.

Re: brake light

The brake warning light on my truck doesn't work except for when I crank it up. I had a leaking T connector on the brake lines and all the fluid leaked out and it didn't light up, how would I fix the switch?

Like stated before, it isn't supposed to work like that. This light is ONLY for hyd failure.

Since we know the light is good, ground the brown wire and look for the light. It'll prbably come on since it lights up in crank mode.
Most likely your ditrabution valve has crapped out on you. You can try bleeding the brakes, and then with the truck stopped, slam on the brakes like in a panic stop. This may free up the piston that moves from center on front or back, but odds are it won't.

Re: brake light

Maybe we're talking apples and oranges here, but my Camaro light stays on when the E-brake is on. It's supposed to on that vehicle. It also comes on as I'm cranking, but of course goes off when the E-brake is off.

However, I don't know what the trucks are supposed to do, especially since the brown wire is disconnected right now.

Sounds like a good idea. If you get time maybe post a picture of your bracket etc so others, myself included, will have an easier time copying your design for the ebrake modification.
Thanks

Re: brake light

Thanks for the help Longhorn Man. I grounded the wire and it lit up, but the switch is probably still messed up. I'm not too worried about it since I fixed the problem but it would be cool if it actually worked. It looks like I can get a socket or a wrench on there and unscrew the switch, does it come out of there or what?

Re: brake light

I guess i'll just leave it alone, I don't wanna screw up the 35 year old brake lines twisting on it.
