I need to put some power steering on my 68 GMC. I havent driven it on the road, but I can tell just by riding around my camproad that I'm going to need it. How hard is it to swap over to power from manual steering, and what parts will I need??? Thabks for the info.

I have most of the parts needed for an L6 PS upgrade, including an xtra resevoir and pulleys and all kinds of brackets. I would be willing to part with it since nobody seems to want to buy my engines

It's all used though - so take it as you will.

Expect to pay at least $200 for the gearbox. You can get a junked one from a yard, then use it as a core - will save you at least $60 on the cost.

Might as well upgrade the tie rods, sleeves idler and pitman arm while there.

At minimum, you will need:
New PS gearbox
New Pitman arm
Resevoir/pump
Pulley
Brackets
You may need new rag joint, I am not 100% certain.

The tie rods and etc. need no upgrades.........super super tight. There is hardly any play in it. Isn't there some sort of power assist thing or something like that out there for manual steering?

I have heard that you can cannibalize a bearing or something and stick it into your manual gearbox to increase the ratio of the box, but I'll be damned if I can find the post on that...

Power steering box, pitman arm, pump and lines. Add bracket to fit whatever motor you're running.

I am ripping apart a 68 K20 with a 283 and power steering. I have all of the above that can be yours for the right price of 50.00 plus shipping

forgot to ask, what engine is in the k20 you are parting out....I have a 250 with brackets already, will this pump work?

You have a 305 V6. None of the I6 or SBC pumps and brackets will work for you. Plus there are differences in the pitman arm and drag link assemblies between manual and PS setups on the pre-open knuckle D44 FE. You should contact board member ERL, he did exactly what yoy want to do with the same year/drivetrain combo.

Don't start ripping apart a functional truck and/or buying parts before you research the parts interchangeability and availability thereof. Talk to ERL, he's the 4x4 305 V6 guru here.

You also have a plow pump setup which may or may not interfere with the stock PS pump. I'd hate to see you get in over your head and spend money on the wrong parts.

Am I looking at interchangability issues with the dana 44hd of a 1970 k20?
Also, any word on the 283 p.s. pump working on a 250 block?

Your's is open knuckle so you should be okay.

Pump will work, brackets and pulleys will not

P.O. put a "Quick Ratio" power box in my c-10 , It's not that different in ratio, but feels kind of squirley. He also put on a stabilizer to cure the squirlyness , but it makes no diff. with or without it. Guess for racing or something like that it would be good.
