After I bought my GMC almost everyone I knew freaked out that I would spend $700 on such a POS. Whats 700 bucks? I have seen people gamble more than that in one night at our casino! The best though, was the response I got from a friend after putting a new carb and HEI swap on the 250-6: "Runs pretty good!...judging from the sound of it the trip to dump it off at the scrapyard should be no problem"

I'm sorry, but as a Honda lover and a classic Chevy lover, this is a horrible statement to make. You can't beat the originality and nostalga of our trucks, but you cannot beat the dependability and versatility of a Honda. but to the thread, everyone thinks I pay too much on my truck, but then I/they realize I just spent, say 1800 dollars for new suspension, doesn't make 500 for a new grill seem like a bad idea :P

I just explain to them that everytime I buy something for my truck it gets better, you don't get that kinda satisfaction sending a payment off to a loan company.
It gets me to and from work and with the cost of new trucks I am already paying for a bathroom and a place to sleep.
I also used to get kidded about the mazda beater I drove (30mpg) now with high gas prices I hear 'wish I had something like' from the same people.

So it is 2001 and I'm at the public boat ramp in Red Wing getting my brand new Triton ready to dump in, waiting for a buddy who is meeting me there.
I pulled it the 100 miles with my truck.

As I'm walking around the boat a guy next to me with a new Skeeter and a new Dodge says,
"I can't believe it."
I answer,
"Whats that?"
He replies:
"You pull that boat with that truck."

Without hesitation I said,
"Yes. However the boat is decreasing in value and the truck is increasing in value."

He didn't say anything else after that.

I think the VAST majority of peeps enjoy seeing these old trucks, especially one in decent shape. I never heard any snide comments ( pre resto) and if I did I wouldn't take it personally.
Gas mileage is not really an issue compared to the huge new trucks on the road now. The pollution output is an issue on my beater 350 but I'll try and balance it out with extra special earth care in some other way...maybe I'll not be a developer or pesticide user...something.
Lets face it buying a new car is financially stupid, even if we will all do it at some point in time. You could have bought your truck ten years ago and sell it for twice that today.

I bought my K5 last December and have had numerous people ask me why I bought it and and why I am fixing it up. Even with all the money I have put into it it is still FAR less expensive than buying a newer used truck or new truck. Plus none of them are as cool as this one.

I have a 1963 Lincoln Continental and it was in the shop for a while having some things done. The owner's wife runs the counter and she asked me, with a scowl on her face, "What are you going to do with this?". She won't get a ride.

it doesnt take a genuis to realize :

1 . 200-300 dollar insurance per month
2. 250-300 dollar car payment per month
3. still getting 14- 18 mpg on most SUV's

...hmmm i'll buy a classic and learn alittle about auto mechanics...

the way i see it .. more real honest to god trucks for us !!!!.....

Excellent points all - truth is most classics/junkers that you tinker with are notoriously better financial investments with lots of intangable benefits over the new ones. Most are relatively free - when you look at the resale value against your investment cost. The $40K new vehicle loses $10-$15K in one year that can never be recovered irrelevant of your monthly payment - Imagine what that money can do to a classic. If they are questioning your investment - its just a shame they dont understand.....

I had Screamin' appraised 2 years ago for insurance reasons. If I feel the question warrants an answer, I tell them what I bought her for, tell 'em what I've got into her, and then I whip out the appraisal. I laugh and ask 'em what they're "Durango" or "Saturn" will be worth in 34 years.

I drive a 93 Crown Vic, with 261,000km's and get 700km per tank for $55 a fill and I have a 84 Pontiac Parisenne, that get the same. Big, safe, comfortable. My wife was rear ended 4 moths ago. She was at a dead stop and a Hyundai travelling 70/km per hour rear ended her. His car was totaled.Ours rear bumper was pushed in. My wife is suffereing from 3rd degree whiplash,Myofatio pain syndrom. The cop said the car saved her life. I like big old and I really don't think they qualify for gas guzzling. My truck on th othe hand gets 3mpg BUT.....Blows away any Fonda,Crapota,or rice burner and weighs atleast 1000lbs more!!! Each vehcile I own will pass all emisions, I guarantee runs cleaner than most people cars on the raod as my vehicles are over maintained. I will never buy small econo-box pepsi can bic lighter cars. and my 93 Crown Vic hauls, Its a quick quick car. 4.6 litre,4:11 gears. I raceda Turbo Talon early 90's and stood beside him upto 150 km/hr. Yes imports are reliable. Lets do the math. GM alternators...life span 3 years, replacement value $110 new in Canada. Alternator for Honda $568, life span 5 years.I know these facts as I worked in both dealerships. 10 minture to change alternator on small block chev. 2.3 hours on a Accord. Honda makes a good product but now lets do an accident. Lets go head to head in my Parisenne to a Accord. Same year, and bang. Whats left? Someone whos alive, sorry cars are replaceable.people are not!!! My wife is alive today because of the boat she drives!!!!

Technologically speaking and as far as reliability (I have a 90 mile round trip commute for work every day), you can't beat a modern vehicle. The quality, reliabilty and efficiency of a modern car/truck is leaps and bounds beyond anything from the vintage(s) we so admire/enjoy. Yes, fuel injection, electronic spark, electronically controlled transmissions and computers are GOOD things.

As far as looks go, 67-72, there is none better. As far as pride of ownership etc etc and all those kinds of things that many mention above, I concur.

And just like stllookn above me, on the weekends when I'm doing chores, running to the dump, hauling the mower etc etc (I live in rural OK)....I will use my most beat piece of junk looking truck (a 66 Chev LWB) just so I can see the looks I get from people for driving such a beater. If they only knew what I had in the garages at home!!!!

I just sold my '91 Celica GT, for 2K. Wife told me to use the money for my '69. Wow.....

As for people asking what it cost and/or what's it worth? Ain't none of their bidness. Kinda like askin' a woman how much she weighs or how old she is. For the most part, she ain't gonna say anything 'bout how much she weighs and whe MIGHT tell you how old she is....assumin' you ain't married to the woman you're askin'. If you're married to her and you're askin' them questions.....nah, ain't goin' there.

My bride knows what I paid for my truck and what I've spent on it. When I bought it, she wanted to know how much it would take to "fix it up" like I want it to be. I told her I'd have as much in it as a new truck would cost. I still got some more room to go to reach the new truck price, but life kicked in when I retired and the money seems to be needed for health insurance, more than the truck.
