How much can I lift without major mods?

I'm gonna special order some coil springs for some added lift. I've heard some people say that you can do 4" lift without having to modify the control arms, and I've heard others say 2". Which is it?

If it's 2wd, you can go 2 up front before you hit the angle limit on the upper ball joint. If your running coils on the rear, about 2 1/2 to 3 before the panhard rod starts to ark the rear end over to the left.
