Tuned Port Injection

I am considering putting a TPI in my 68 and I could use some ideas, suggestions, things not to and to do, etc. Thanks in advance for you comments, suggestions, and pictures (if you have some to show off). My truck is a SWB C-10 with a 350/700r4.

There are quite a few of us that have TPI. I bought a whole car and transfered everything, that is what I would recomend. I would also recomend the Helm manual for whatever car you choose, it has great wiring diagrams and other info for your setup. I can add more when I have some time.

Here's what I did:
I bought an 86 IROC with a 305 and auto. I pulled the TPI, harness, computer, and anything else I needed. I put it all on my existing 350. I bumped the injectors up, and had my chip reburned by Brian at tpichips.com. I removed anything from the stock wiring harness that I didn't need, like the wipers, ac, electric fans, emissions, etc. I put a tank in the rear with an internal fuel pump. It was pretty straight forward, just a little time consuming. I am using all the stock sensors, knock, O2, etc. I have a mass air system.
One of my problems was a thermostat housing, but I was able to get one that has worked well for me.
I have been running mine for well over a year and I love it.
Here are a few members that I can think of that are running GM TPI too: Russel, BobbyK, maybe Cheyenne10, and a few others that I can't think of right now.

Both of those sites that neonlarry mentions helped me a lot. I bought my air ducting and vehicle speed sensor from jagsthatrun.

I did just about what 71swb4X4 did with a couple of exceptions. The wiring harness from the donor Camaro was toast so a Painless harness was used. Since the car wasn't running and the condition of the electronics were suspect, traded the ECM at Adavnced Auto and got one for a 1988 Camaro 350 ($80) and bought the chip for that car from GM ($65). Used a late 80's Firebird 90 deg rubber snorkle adapter and bought a snorkle tube with K&N filter on Ebay that fits a 5.9 litre (?) Durango hemi. Fabricated a bracket to hold the tube. Highly suggest the 700R4 swap at the same time and conversion to single serpentine belt set up along with alternator upgrade.

One word of caution, the relays for the mass air flow sensor and the mass air flow burn off look the same and the plug from either one will plug into the other. If you get them reversed, the engine will run very, very rich and load up, especially at idle. The engine will get so much gas it will wash the cylinder walls and a great deal of gas will end up in the crank case. This little mistake caused five error codes to be set that pointed to the mass air flow sensor as the possible culprit but I knew that was wrong since it was new.

I got my TPI fired up for about 10 minutes till I discovered that my Mass Air Sensor was shot, and since I've been trying to find speed density parts within my price range.

Got the TPI sitting on my dresser behind me, with a carb on the truck at the moment. All I am needing now is a `730 ECM with a 350 chip, and a speed density knock sensor. Hopefully get it installed early next year

What about the VATS. I have everything out of a 89 IROC and was told I would have to buy a chip to bypass it. Can you elimnate it or wire it up to work without the ignition switch.

Chuck, here is what the jagsthatrun book says:
If you have the key that came with it, measure the resistance across the "pellet" and get a matching resistor from Radio Shack and wire it into the VATS module. If you don't have the key but you have some patience, you can try each resistance until it works. There are 15 different resistances.
They also go on to say that Chevrolet has a tool called the "interregator" that can determine the proper key code, so your local Chevy dealer may be able to help.
They also say that you can purchase a new PASS-KEY module form the dealer which will accept and of the resistances the first time power is applied to it.
They go on to say that the easiest way may be to purchase a PROM chip that has the VATS eliminated.

I hope that helps, you should purchase this book, it has helped me a lot. They sell it at www.jagsthatrun.com. I also see used ones on Ebay or half.co, quite often.

I have had this set up now for almost 20 year's. I put it in back in 87 out of a 86 Iroc HO. About 2 years later I installed the 700-R4. I'm running a ferrerio V-6 computer from street and performance. My truck has over 350,000 miles on it and the motor has 200,000 of them on it. Here are a couple of pic, check my home page and you can see more of it.

Now, there's the best reference I've ever seen about the reliablity of GM's TPI (mass airflow) setup. Beautiful setup to boot!!! I hope mine lasts at least half that long.....

This is my everyday driver to work. I have a lot of stuff done on this truck. It need's a paint job right now, but my 17 year old and 12 year old get most of my time right now. Oh and money too.
I upgraded the 700-R4 with corvette stuff and it's performed well over the last 15 years. I put the r-134A in it and a late model system in it also.

Andy, did you change that to Speed Density? I don't see the Mass Air Flow Sensor.

Yes, I never had the mass air flow. When I did this truck I think it was like the only one on here at the time. I know it was the only one I had seen in person until I went to Chips rod shop in Denver NC for his grand opening. Street and performance was there and that sold me.
