Largest tire without a lift?

I have a set of BFG AT sitting in my garage that used to be on my Wrangler. However the Chevy has the standard 30" tire and the ones I want to put on are almost a 32". How big of a tire can I have before it starts to rub?

if it is a 4wd, you may be able to get away with 32's. however i have seen some mixed results. my friends stock hight blazer has 33's with no rubbing while some other trucks rub wuth 32's. it really depends on how saggy your springs are

I don't know about 32s, but on my 1 ton, 33s rubbed BADLY until I put my lift in. Here's a pic of my truck before the lift kit to give you an indication:


I could only turn the wheel about 1/2 way to full lock before the tires rubbed on flat pavement. Any kind of bump or tilt in the road where I was turning (like into a driveway) made it even worse. Because of this, I doubt 32s would fit, especially on a 1/2 ton which is quite a bit lower than my 1 ton was, especially if your springs are a few years old.

I had one ton springs from a military CUCV truck in my K10 and stock 1/2 tons in the rear and ran 33x12.5" tires on 15x8" wheels with 3.75" of BSing, no rubbing at all with no sway bar.

The wheels make a big difference also, if you run 10" wide wheels your probably not gonna clear for sure, 15x8s you could probably do it. And it just depends, I probably couldn't of cleared my 33x12.5's with 1/2 ton springs in mine.

1/2ton 2WD runs 32x11.50s with no rub unless i hit a bump and then it hits the top outter edge just barely and that is now fixed with rolling the fender.. but i agree it depends on how saggy your springs are.

on my truck (keep in mind 1 ton), i know height wise a 33" could fit easily, but it hhas 6.5" wide tires right now, so i don't know that you can go much more than maybe 33 x 7.5 without problems at full lock..haven't really looked though.. it has 235/85-16's on it right now.

I have seen 40" on a truck with out a lift. all it take is a little cutting.

I agree, but you won't catch me hacking my nice straight sheetmetal up on my shortbed to fit bigger tires

I guess my question is can I run a 285/75/16 tire on a 2WD 1/2 ton? (no lift)

A CUCV is not a 1 ton. It's a 1/2 ton.

I have had 2 sets of 32" BFG ATs on my 84 K10. They rub while backing and turning for about 10k miles especially when turning to the right. They rub on the back side of the inner fender. 32's will probably fit but variations in each individual body will make all the difference. I wouldn't even try 33s.

Yeah I think that the rim makes the biggest difference. I had 33x12.50s with no rubbing on my 76 3/4 and my roomate had the same tires on his saggy 82 f250 with no problem. I will see soon if I can get 36x12.50s with 4" lift and no cutting.

actually a CUCV truck version is 1 1/4 ton, with dana 60 and 14bolt and 4.56 gears. the CUCV m1009 blazer was 1/2ton.. with 10bolts and 3.08s.

33's rubbed on my 81 K5. Put on a 4" rough country lift (very reasonable) on last year. Very satisified. They recommended 6" for 35's but it looks like I have room for bigger tires with the 4". Currently looking for another set of stock rims to setup with the mudders.

Check out rough country when you look at installing your lift. Great support.

Ok, brain fart there. Most of the CUCV trucks were 1 tons by normal GM designation. The military did designate all but the M1009 as 1 1/4 ton trucks.

Here are some more designators:

M1008: Tactical Cargo, 1 ton
M1008A1: Tactical Cargo, 1 ton
M1009: Tactical Utility, 1/2 ton
M1010: Tactical Ambulance, 1 ton
M1028: Tactical Shelter Carrier, 1 ton

I ran my K5 with 33x12.50s and no lift without any rubbing. Heres a shot:



32's should clear without any issue, but as people have said it will depend on the amount of spring sag.

I've heard of some that got away with 35's on no lift with minor trimmage to the front and back corners. Here's the big legal disclaimer:

I've got 31s on my K25, and they are too small for the truck. Wanna go with 33s when all is said and done

One thing you also have to do is measure the actual tire size. There is a lot of variances in different tire manufactures. My 31x10.50 (15x8 rims) tires are only 29.5 inches tall and that was when they were brand new installed. Rim width will also effect overall tire height along with how the tires wear on them.

It was a M1008 CUCV Military truck, has a D60 in the front, 14 bolt in back and a 6.2L Diesel motor. Technically the M1008 CUCV trucks are 1 1/4ton rated trucks.

A sorta cheap way to get a little more "lift" would be to replace all the cab/body mounts with Polyurethane/Polygraphite.
32x11½" 15's on a 15x8 with 4" BS should work on a ½ton 2wd..

Now my only question is where can I get a set of 16" rims with the same bolt pattern. I hear that the WJ Grand Cherokee (1999-2004) have the same 5x5" pattern - is this true or not? Did GM ever make a 5 bolt 16" rim? I know that they have 6 bolt 16" wheels for the 4WD Suburbans and Tahoes. Are there adaptors available?

My old 84 Camorado with 33x12.50 on a 15x8 rally. I slightly rubbed on the tie rod on the driver side. Oh by the way there is no lift on it.

Yes, they did make a 16x5.5 rim for a 5x5 bolt pattern, ive only got five, and the four best are on my 1977 Heavy half, making its stance like a 3/4 ton (tough looking now) and its got 31s. I did this because my speedo was off by ten, and now its about 4 slow because of my 3.42 rear. If you want, i can get some pics for ya. ive been looking for about 6 months, and my dad has been looking for about 10 years for another set of them. If you happen to find a set, gimme a call. A buddy of ours picked them up at a farm sale.

i run a 36"/12.5"/16.5", i think i'm going for something smaller like 32”/10.5/16.5
