does it matter what time of rear suspension your rear end came out of???
here's the senario... 67 with coils wants to put a 71 rear end which had leaf springs... will it work???

Re: rear end ????? feedback asap

You will need to weld on the bracket for the coils, as the leaf spring brackets are different.

Re: rear end ????? feedback asap

If you are putting the 71 in a 67, maybe you just need to compare the perches and move as necessary. This should be a possible swap. May be easier just to find a 71/72 that came from coils.

Re: rear end ????? feedback asap

i don't think the leaf rears had panhard bars so you'd have to weld bracket for that also

Re: rear end ????? feedback asap

Why are you doing the swap and what kind of differentials are they? 12 Bolt Chevy? 10 Bolt Chevy? Are you looking to change the ratio?

Re: rear end ????? feedback asap

If your looking at swapping internals, like axels, the 72 axle is a bit wider. I think about 3/4". But you should be able to swap out center sections if you just want the gears out of the 72.

Re: rear end ????? feedback asap

the 67 has the disc brake conversion which is now 5 lug and the rear is the factory rear 6 lug. we want to buy rims and what not and it's just easier to buy all the same lug pattern ie. tire rotation, blow outs. i think the factory rear is a 10 bolt and the new rear is a 12 bolt posi with 3.73's. so we have to cut brackets off of 10 bolt and re weld on 12 bolt.... am i correct.

Re: rear end ????? feedback asap

OR, you could do what I am planning on doing. I can't seem to find a good coil spring 71/72 rear-end, and I too, have a 5 lug disk brake set up on my truck with a 6 lug rear. Early Classic Enterprises sells 6 lug front rotors that will work on your truck. They are about 180 bucks for the pair plus shipping. Just a suggestion....

The rear ends I have found around here are like $250 and well used. Make sure when you cut/weld the perches that you get the angles correct on them and that they are straight and square. It sucks when you burn through a set of rear tires after only 10K miles

2 bills for rotors?!?!
I used to push those for them for the same reason you are bringing them up... but man, 2 hundred bucks.

Re: rear end ????? feedback asap

Andy, that's just what I've seen in their catalog, I think $89 each? If you know where I can get them cheaper I would be much appreciative. I only paid $70 for the pair of 5 lugs I got from Advance Auto.

Re: rear end ????? feedback asap

I know it differs from junk yard to junk yard, but around here you could get a whole rearend for less than 100 bucks... it's just a matter of waiting untill one comes through...esp if you want a particular gearing.
Have you contacted local machine shops to find out what it'd cost to have your axles redrilled?

Re: rear end ????? feedback asap

The yard's round here must have all gotten together and agreed $250 was the going rate. I went to 4 near columbia (SC) and they all wanted $200-$250. I'm not a big fan of redrilling axles. As far as rims, I'm going with a brand new set of white spokes so 5 or 6 lug won't matter.... I'm going back to Cola this weekend, might be time to check around again.....
