Unhappy Edelbrock 1406?

Hello again. I have a 1406 Edelbrock carb on my 72 Blazer with a 350. I just put HEI on it, and it was running good, however, now, it's starting to hesitate, and flatten out in a certain rpm range...i.e., running very rich. I checked all vacuum hoses, choke, and ignition...everything looks good. Here's what I did find.
When I took the air cleaner off and looked into the carburator, I see fuel puddled around the counter weights?? above and behind the secondary plates. Actually, it's at that level all the way around the inside of the carb....is my float sticking? It has always run rich, and this carb was on the blazer when I bought it. It's a 350, and the carb is a 625 cfm....My idle circuit is exactly at 2 1/2 turns...and that seems to be right...I can run them all the way in by hand, and nothing changes...except the engine almost dies.
How do you change a float level in one of these?
Any ideas would be great guys/gals...thanks....

well unfortunatly I can't help you on this one......... But I also have been having the same problem with mine! Thats strange I thought I was the only one. Althought I have not noticed a puddle but my idle circut is set just about the same as yours and I'm also running very rich! I hope someone here has some info that is more helpfull! But I also cannot understand why are carbs are doing this! DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT IS CAUSING THIS TO HAPPEN, AND HOW IT CAN BE FIXED? Goodluck Patch

carb

the 1406 edelbrock carb has very big jets in them. The primary is .095 and the secondary is .100 I have the same carb on my 350 and it sucks the gas big time, and runs rich. there is a kit you can buy to change the needles and jets and a graph is in the booklet than came with the carb to help you with what jets and needles as well as springs to use.

Talking Calabration Kit

When I pit my new carb on it was all messed up had 102 jets in the primary and 95 in the secondary.Swapped them around and it still hesitated so I bought the calibration kit.The graph in the book helped alot and thekit gives you several different spring's,metering rod's,jets to use then you should be able to dial it in.

Guys,
Are you running a fuel pressure regulator???????????????!????

Edelbrock/carter carbs are very VERY sensitive to fuel pressure.

Get a guage regulator combo from jegs for about 55$ and set it at about 4-5 PSI.
Dont go over about 6 PSI at the very most.(and I say that with the fact that every guage is not 100% accurate).

Anything over 6 PSI will push the neddle out of seat and it will stumble,run rich,and have part throttle problems.

After all most stock pumps push 7-9 PSI and that is enough to make a edelbrock run like POO

Try a real regulator with a guage and see what you think.

Nobody has ever mentioned running a regulator with the carb. Cant say that I even saw it in the booklet on it.

it is in the book..around page 7 i think, it doesn't say to use a regulator, just says no more than 5.5psi..I can atest to the accuracy of 68's testimony, he alerted me to my problem...my stock fuel pump was pushing out 7psi and I was having all the same problems ya'll are... I bought the calibration kit at the same time and ended up taking it back because the regulator and guage cured me.

I thought it was just a junk carb. I've had trouble with mine ever since I went out west this spring. When your driving down the road I can smell raw gas all the time. Even with the electric choke it stumbles in the morning during warm up. So this could be the answer to my problem. Well if this fix's it, my hat is off to you, and thanks a million, Tom.

I have the carter in my 68 on an early 80's 350 with stock fuel pump and it works great. The edelbrock is on my 67 with an electric pump and it farts and stumbles on a regular basis. I think I will go buy me the regulator for the 67.

Autozone

I have an Edelbrock 1405 on my truck. Does it have the same size jets in it as the 1406, or is the 1406 diferent just because it has an electric choke?

Do you guys know if I could purchase a regulator at Autozone or somewhere like that instead of ordering from Summit/Jegs? Also how much would one cost from the parts stores?
Would any stock vehicle have anything similar on it from the factory so I could just walk up and say "I need a fuel pressure regulator for a 19?? Chevy whatever" ? The guys at my local parts stores have to look everything up by year and vehicle, you can't just ask for a fuel pressure regulator.

I special ordered mine through O'Reilly Auto Parts the guage in my picture was boxed wrong so I sent it back and got the correct guage through O'reilly from Texas Performance, a wholesale performance distributor. You can get anything from your local parts store that you can get out of a catalog... the only limitation is you have to find a counterman willing to exert more effort than "No, I can't get that" atleast from O'Reilly's you can.

You may look up in the phone book for a performance speed shop.

I have never had good luck with the local chain parts stores.
And even if you do get one through the local chain store like autozone,pep boys,etc you may pay a lot more for it.

We picked one up at our local speed shop R@E Racing made by Holley for 25 dollars it had one in and 3 outs we put a 0-15 lb guage in one of the outs. This was done before the edelbrock was last week we will see how it all works. Eed ke6bnl
