Rattling drive shaft. I think.

When I put in the clutch to slow down, I can feel and feel rattling or chattering that slows and stops with the drive shaft.

This truck has set for 2+ years, so it is possible that it needs u-joints. I did grease them all, but haven't had a chance to drive it much since. I was wondering if my drive shaft bearing could be the problem. I don't know what you can tell from the picture, but any info would be welcome.

Thanks in advance

Roll under the truck and try to wiggle the shaft. It should move only a little. If it moves alot (like 1/2") the center bearing is shot.

It moves, I don't know about a half inch. It will come up and close the 1/4" gap by the rubber bushing.

I'd replace the carrier bearing

There should not be a gap between the bearing and the rubber. It should be attached and all one piece. Looks like you need a new one. New ujoints while your at it might be a good idea too. Its not too hard to do. Here is a link when I did it: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=171772

Re: Rattling drive shaft. I think.

I just bought a carrier bearing because mine is shot. Started out as a slight rattle and turned into a serious clanking really fast. Can you hear the rattle when you move the driveshaft? Also, mine only made noise moving forward.

Re: Rattling drive shaft. I think.

Mine only makes noise in forward gears as well. Looks like I'll be buying a new one.

Does NAPA carry these?
