Tilt column repair: where the shifter goes.

I was cleaning up my new-to-me tilt last night. I noticed that the pin that holds the shift arm in will not stay in. It looks like the top hole is "wallered" ("worn" or "ovaled" for you not familiar with E. Texas lingo)
Is there a way to repair this hole? I thought about JB Weld then drill the hole back out. The pin is in it, but I need to know if it's the right one. It has a head similar to a nail but only slight lip and then it has grooves that are only long enough to contact the top part of the area that the lever goes. As always, any info is greatly appreciated.
P.S. If it's not possible to repair, where could someone get a replacement?

You're not the only one with a wallered out hole. I doubt if JBW would hold for very long. It would probable come apart when you drove the splines into it. But it might be worth a try, if you have time to let it cure for a couple of days.

Wallered is a term I learned about half a century ago. And I grew up in Kansas. Means the hole is wore out and too dang big.

I have the same problem. If you get a fix...post it. I just push my pin back down every few days when I notice it sticking up.

A friend of mine has a TIG welder. I asked him to try welding the hole closed for me on a van column I bought for $20. There's something strange about the aluminum they used on that part because the aluminum from the welding rod would not stick to it. If you have access to a lathe, you might be able to make a custom oversized pin.

Supposedly somebody out there makes an oversized pin. I haven't seen one personally, just read it somewhere on the board.

If I found an oversized pin, I would have to drill out my shift lever so it would not bind, correct?

So, why can you use a roll-pin (if that is what they are called) in there?
You might have to shorten it so it won't stick out the top or bottom.

In the past I have enlarged the hole, tapped it and then screwed in a bushing cut from a bolt. Use an aluminum bolt if you like. Use a permanent thread locker, sleeve retaianing compound or epoxy to retain the bushing. You can then drill a new hole or even just drill the bushing before you install it. It worked for me and I have another that I plan on doing the same thing to.

That's an excellent idea. The hole in the bushing would probably have to be off-center because the original hole is so close to the edge of the material.

My 70 uses a roll pin, but it's a 3 on the tree, not an automatic.
