Steering Colum Shifting

I aquired a Steering Column from a 79 Suburban that had a 700R4 transmission and installed it in my project 78 SWB with a Turbo 400 transmission. The shifter will not allow me to put the transmission into park and it will also start in reverse. The truck was orignally a stick shift so the original column does not have a shifter on it.

Does anyone know if this combination is possible or not? If it is not will a column from a pickup with a Turbo 350 work or will I need to get one from a pickup with a Turbo 400?

You should be able to adjust the linkage. There is a pinch bolt at the linkage. Put the tranny in neutral, (block tires first) and loosen the bolt. Place shifter in neutral. When you have them both in neutral, tighten the bolt. Check your tranny for proper shifting. Should be good to go.

Unfortunatel cannot adjust so everything works. There does not seem to be sufficient throw on the colum shifter to get both park and gears at the same time.

The columns are the same. The rod linkage as mentioned before needs adjusted. The way I did this was have someone moving the shifter ont eh column as I was under the truck. Move both to the lowest gear setting. This will bottom out the column linkage and then tighten. Move back up to park and check there.
