Got passed by my own tire!

Yes, did some work on the hubs this weekend.....put everything back together, I know I wrenched on all the lugs pretty hard.....but it looks like the lugs on the drivers side managed to loosen themselves over the last 100 miles.......so here is my problem.....what do I need to get this rig back on the road? I have found both brake pads, and the drum, but the springs, the adjuster, and the backing plate of axle seem to be gone or ground flat......am I gonna be able to find all of this stuff at napa/advanced/autozone....anywhere? Parts numbers would be appreciated.

Also, is there any serious damage I should look out for?

For anyone wondering, I managed to make it about 600 feet down the road.....hit a bump hard, hit the ground, lost all steering and couldn't get the damn thing to stop.....managed to get it slowed down enough before putting it into a 12' deep ditch....during all of this I was fortunate enough to see the tire fly past me.....found it 400 feet behind me.....and the drum 300 feet behind the truck.....the good news, it was on an empty dirt road....no one around, and I was able to leave the truck there while I walked to my house about half a mile down the road.......got my car, bought some lug nuts, jacked up the truck, got the wheel back on, and drove the poor girl home at 5mph.

Re: Got passed by my own tire!

Sounds like a good time to upgrade to a newer D44 or 10 bolt with disk brakes to me!

Just be happy you didn't cause any major damage to your truck!

Re: Got passed by my own tire!

i'd say a junkyard would be a good place to find a new backing plate, or you could check on the parts board//i really wouldn't place any faith on the one you drove down thw road on

After seeing the pictures I was thinking the same thing Russell posted.

I understand those drums are real hard to find. You may have to get a newer disk front end anyways. This is the PERFECT time to upgrade.

What a blessing that the incident occured on a dirt road and so close to home!

I agree. Look closely to see if it is bent. Just a little bend could mess up the alignment of the shoes and adjusters which would cause havoc.

Might as well pull the inner axles and check the u-joint crosses if you replace the backing plate.

Use a torque wrench next time to verify the tightness of the lug nuts. Go for 90-120 ft lbs for 9/16" studs, as per the service manual (SPECIFICATIONS 20 in my '71 manual). Retorque after 100 miles. Hope the budget allows for a disc conversion. I know how that is...

Re: Got passed by my own tire!

So,the drum and wheel were seperate?Sounds like you didn`t finish that corner after your bearing service.I don`t know how one would effect the other.Sounds like your spindle nuts spun off.Was there a funny washer with tabs on it between the spindle nut?Glad it wasn`t worse!I`m sure someone could set you up with what you need right here in the parts section.

Re: Got passed by my own tire!

no, the hub is still on there, there is a locking washer between the two spindle nuts....but the drum goes over the hub....when the wheel came off....the drum went with it.....not sure if it was before or after the front end hit the ground......looks like before as the drum is in good condition still.....I think that retorque after 100 miles is what nailed me.....with the washboard road I live on....I probably should have done it at 30 miles.....because I hit a deusie of a pot hole right before this happened....enough so that I think I actually traveled a couple of feet down the road before the axle hit the ground.

I KNOW i need a new backing plate......4,000lbs truck + 50mph X down a dirt road = enough friction to sand the plate flat from round.....its not bent, its GONE!

I am planning on doing the swap, but I JUST put the bearings in, the shoes and drums look to be brand new.....and I am hunting around for a d60 to put in there.....so I think I will throw some smaller bucks at getting this back on the road, and work on the d60 plan in a bit. (plus....I have no way of getting a newer D44 home without my trucks bed (lol) )

btw, when I finally got it to stop, I was very happy about how the whole thing worked out......it could have been miles away from my house, it could have been on a busy street, I could have hit someone else......on a dirt road, .5 miles from home....where I could just leave it, and take care of it on my own......with only relatively minor damage.....no complaints here....only counting of blessings!

Re: Got passed by my own tire!

Maybe that bump was the tire falling off(drop),then rolling up under your truck(lift).Maybe???
Sorry, now that I looked back at the pictures,I see the hub intact on the spindle.

Re: Got passed by my own tire!

Bad news for you. Those 1970 3/4 ton 4x4's front end parts are one year only, due to it being the only year for an open knuckle drum FE. Your donor will have to be a 1970 3/4 ton 4x4 unless you change out the entire D44. You might want to check with Bill Athey 540 636-7405, He's a board vendor and I sent a complete 70 3/4 ton 4x4 D44 FE down to him several years ago. It had the backing plates but the drums were gone.

You may want to find a disk brake D44 and replace the whole thing at this point. I feel doing that for the sake of disk brakes alone is foolish, but from the parts interchangeability and availability, it's well worth it.

Re: Got passed by my own tire!

I have a 70 c-10 1/2 ton and I re-did my brakes about 2 weeks ago. I got all new hardware, pads, wheel cylinders and drums from advance auto. If its not in stock, im sure they can order it all for you and have it next day. Try your luck there. Best of luck to ya with that. Just be happy theres no body damage.

All I kmow is the drum and spindle are unique because of the larger diameter studs that were used on 70 3/4 tons vs 67-69. I don't know about shoes and backing plates
