Starter/Ignition Run On
Once in awhile, when I go to start my 1 ton, it's like the starter gets stuck. The truck continues to crank and you can't turn it off. Even after I turn the key off, the truck is still trying to turn over. Any ideas? Starter? Ignition? Thanks all.

Re: Starter/Ignition Run On
Thanks for the replies guys. I'm going to sound like an idiot here, but it wouldn't be the first time. Can you elaborate a little more on shimming the starter. Can you buy a starter shim at Autozone, etc.? What does shimming do exactly? Thanks again.

Re: Starter/Ignition Run On
Did you just change starters?

Re: Starter/Ignition Run On
No, but I just recently bought the truck. The previous owner had the same problem with it. He told me about it. I figured worse case, it needed a new starter.

Re: Starter/Ignition Run On
shimming a starter moves the gear away from the flywheel . if there is not enough clearance between the flywheel and the gear on the starter it wont retract after you let off the key. if the problem is still there after shimming , you will most likely need a new starter

Re: Starter/Ignition Run On
my guess would be the starter solenoid. I bought a brand new starter for my 86 and when i put it on I had this same problem. I had to take the solenoid apart and put it back to gether the right way.

Re: Starter/Ignition Run On
There is a big round disk in the back of the soleniod that makes contact between the two terminals(battery-starter)this will stick or weld to the contacts causing the starter to stay engaged. Replace your soleniod should solve your problem.
