Question Junkyards, Truck Parts in Kentucky?

Looking at moving to Lexington, KY. Looking for used sources of parts for the Panel(body panels). Any board members in KY or TN? How clean is the Vintage Tin down there?

Wild4Wheels,

I live just outside of Lexington. There are some truck to be found, but you have to go outside of lex to find them. Ky has used salt for years so most KY truck have rust. We have a good to great parts supplier in lex called OB Smith's, he has been selling 57 chevy parts for yrs & yrs, the last 4 or 5 yrs he has added 67-72 truck parts. His prices are competive and you can save on shipping for body panels. Junk yards are getting harder to find, but they are still out there. It's about a 2-2.5hr trip to Knoxville, TN, so that is an option. Don't know about TN junkyards, but have seen some nice trucks from there. A lot of the yards in this area get vehicles from Cinn. OH and Columbus OH area, as well as local, so body parts around here is limited. Running gear parts are easier, Interior parts and chrome are getting harder and harder to find, but still can be found if looking hard enough. I have not been to many jards near here so this is what I have saw at those I visit. I have an uncle-in-law with a jard a few hrs. south but his trucks are picked over except for running gear. He does have a few C30's with short wheel bases (not sure of length) and older trucks as well (65 GMC w/ a v-6).

There are 3 to 5 board member near Lex, so one of us should be able to help you out finding jards and parts.

I live about 30 miles south of Lex. and there are some trucks to be found...There are some in the Airport Road Salvage Yard in Junction City, which is about 15 miles south of me and I see old trucks sitting behind barns, houses and out in fields around these parts. You just never know what you will find, but they are out there....

Junk Yards!!!! You have got to be kidding! We are still driving all the old trucks here.
I'm west of Lexington about 175 miles. They are everywhere around here and most that you find in good shape are on the road.

You gotta be kidding right? Is there THAT much clean tin down there? I was haviong a hard time seeing anything older than an 81 Citation! Made the mistake of picking up a local Classic and Muscle Car Trader Mag. Seems like people are pretty proud of what they have. Man maybe I should just take the plunge and make the move to KY. Sure am not having any luck in Iowa finding quarters for the Panel. Sounds like I would be embarrassed to bring the Panel along with down there. She has holes big enough to throw a cat through!

Ky has plenty of junk yards with trucks but like most other places--stuff is picked over. Best places are out in the boonies where you get lost and see a pile of cars/trucks sitting "out back". 5 minutes from me there is a scrap yard with about 10-12 67-72 trucks but with little usefull stuff left on them. But, there were so many of these trucks made--I find them sitting around all time. Some wasted, some part wasted, and some (he, he, he,)my future stash?!! Huck in Bagdad, Kentucky

Huck! haven't talked to you for a while. So you are willing to give up these sources of trucks if I move down there right? And of course you would give up your prime fishing spots too right? One of my biggest concerns is that there is no crappie fishing to be had.

Wild4wheels, There's plenty of fishing, crappie included, in KY. In fact ky has water than any other state. Look at a ky map, you got Lake Cumberland (2hr drive), Cane Run lake (<2 hr drive), Laurel lake, Harrington lake, Kentucky Lake & Lake Barkley (west side of state), The Elkhorn Creek (just short of a river), Ky river, Ohio River, Green river,...I could go on...
They even trout fish below the dam on Lake Cumberland.
