6 lug rear disc install done!

Got the new brackets fabricated and welded on today. It was fairly easy to do. I will have to re-powdercoat the rear end but only after all the brake line and e-brake has been mocked up. Brakes are off '03 burb. I would have shown the calipers installed, but they sent me the wrong ones, correct ones should be here in a few days.

Re: 6 lug rear disc install done!

2wd or a 4x4 blazer?
Must be a 4x4 with the 6 lug disks but maybe not.

What the overall plans for your blazer?
Lift/drive train/gearing/tires...ect. Sorry if I missed that somewhere...

Great start with the brakes.

Re: 6 lug rear disc install done!

4wd. I cutoff the old mounting flanges, and made new ones. They went right back in the same location, just clocked differently. Not sure they would fit under stock wheels yet. It has a 13" rotor. I am running 17x9 wheels, so no problem for me there. The best part about this swap is the part cost me $200 including shipping and it is all new GM stuff.

As soon as I get the e-brake cables figured out, be happy to do it.

Re: 6 lug rear disc install done!

Finally got the rear calipers in. Man, these are huge. It will require a 16" wheel minimum to run these brakes.

Looks great! Keep us posted on a parts list. Did you buy all new parts or used?

Re: 6 lug rear disc install done!

Got them new off car-part.com. Very good deals on there if you look. Sometimes you can score new stuff like I did for the price of used parts. Never would have got it done this cheap going thru a dealer.

Re: 6 lug rear disc install done!

Got to mount the axle to the chassis before I can figure out which ebrake cables to use. Since I am going with a 4" lift, I may end up using extended cab or long bed cables for the extra length. that will take some guessing. Should be able to finiah that this month. Next time I stop by the dealer I will get a full list of part numbers.

All 1/2 ton 1999-2006 'New body style' FS pickups are 6 luggers. GM had 4 wheel discs until 2004 or so. Then they want back to the front disc / rear drum setup.

Re: 6 lug rear disc install done!

Right now I am still trying to work out the brake line that attaches to the rear and e-brake set up. The rear discs are off the shelf 2003 Suburban or equivelant Hollander interchange. The actual brackets are fabricated and can post dimensions. I am working with classic tube to get me the correct setup. As soon as the parts arrive and work, I will post a full article.

Re: 6 lug rear disc install done!

Ok I'm kind of a brake Newbee. Should you upgrade the front discs to keep up with the very efficient technology of the new rears?

Also, are these ABS. I can lock up my front discs on my 72' with no sweat.

Locking up is what you want to avoid. If barkes loack up then they have gone beyond the point of a controlled stop. If the brakes are stopping rapidly you without locking up they are generating a controlled stop. Bigger is better...

Re: 6 lug rear disc install done!

I'm aware of that.

I guess my question could have been read two ways.

What I meant was I can lock mine up (stock disc brakes) and that's not good. Does this new conversion have ABS so they won't lock up (good)?

Re: 6 lug rear disc install done!

You will not get ABS because the tone ring, sensors, computer, and ABS controller, speed sensors, etc, would all have to be swapped over. All he did was use the brake hardware itself.

Nice work, I wonder if there is a similar OEM setup that I can put behind my 15" wheels.
