Cool Wiper trick...

I got tired of reaching for the wiper switch every time rain or snow or wet roads wanna just spit on the windshield. I needed something to trigger the wipers, from the steering wheel - or someplace more convenient.

Grabbed the voletmeter. Check the two wires to the plug on the wiper motor. And, discovered if you jumper these with the ignition on, you blow up Cleveland. Not really, but, the wipers will cycle.

So, I grabbed a old cell phone coiled charger cable, soldered on a red momentary contact switch, fashioned a small holder on one of the spokes of my Grant wheel, ran the cable down the bottom of the column and jumpered the two wires.

I now have a wiper button, convenient to my left thumb while driving. Works great. And, Some kid at A-Zone yesterday wanted to know where my NOS bottle was. I told him it was new BLUE liquid NOS and it's right here in this transluscent bottle on the fenderwell.

Try this trick guys. Don't see why it wouldn't work on the dash, shifter, signal stem, or even a foot switch.

. . . sure hope Cleveland is ok.

- Dave

My horn button on the steering wheel doesn't work (most things inside my steering column don't work) so we have a button coming out of the end of the turn signal to activate the horn. When people ask I tell them it's my NAWS button and a select few go "REALLY???"

Re: Wiper trick...

I am going the hard way with my 80. I bought a 90 Blazer column with tilt, cruise, wipers.
Tired of reaching for the dash too. What a dumb GM idea that was!!!!

I used to have a '78 (I think that was the year) Mustang. That was where the horn button was from the factory. The whole stalk was pushed in to honk the horn. It sounds weird, but it seemed very natural once you used it a couple of times.

My Dad's '70 Mach I had an option called Rim Blow. It isn't as dirty as it sounds. You just squeezed the steering wheel and it honked the horn.

When my Dad bought the car, he thought something was wrong with it. There was no "horn button," but the horn would randomly honk while he was driving it.

Re: Wiper trick...

I put a momentary foot switch in my 68. It was out of a 68 mustang, ford used them for the same thing. They work great. I plan on putting them in my new 78 project and my 69 k5.

OK Here's pics! (we're all feelin' the pics!)

Here's the Switch on the wheel and the coiled cable....

And the wiring taps at the wiper motor....

I will be soldering and wrapping this soon.

Hope this helps.

Very Innovative.
Given your type of steering wheel, you could really get fancy and mod some fiberglass to conceal and inset the switch between the openings of the steering wheel spokes. Could probably add a couple more switches for lights, turn signals (motocycle-like) and whatever else.
(Hint Hint...)

Reminds me of Stephen Wright's quote:

I have a switch in my apartment... it doesn't do anything.... Every once in a while, I turn it on and off.... One day I got a call... it was from a woman in France.... She said "Cut it out"....

That is a great idea! I'm getting spoiled in my 87 now with the delay wipers on the column.

Yea. Mentally, I'm very innovative and creative. But, actually applying those ideas . . . The world is better off with the short-cuts I take. I talk myself out of most big ideas, mostly due to time constraints; i/e: I don't have time to do it once - six or seven times. The pics show maybe a 1/2 hour of work that took me a full afternoon - WITHOUT beer!

But, ya never know....
