Double - Bolts from the bottom up, 1st pic I will post

Single - Bolts from the top down, 2nd pic I will post

Single - Also has a interior dome light like a P/U truck

You will also notice the thickness around the Window

Re: Single vs Double wall Tops

The difference is the way they are bolted down. I think single bolts from the top down and double wall bolts from the bottom up?

Single is about 5 times as hard to find as a Double

Double wall tops were available for all years.

Single wall tops were only available as an option in '72.

Mounting holes between the two types of tops do not match up. In other words, if your rig had a double wall top and you put a single wall top on, you will need to drill new holes to mount the top. Same if you go the other way.

Which is better, it's an idividual choice. Some say the single wall top because they are lighter, not by much though. Double wall tops have a problem with the top layer "denting in", due to degradation of the fiblerglass over time. But I've seen single wall tops with "dents" too.

How true... Now I gotta drill my bedsides.

I found/purchased a single wall top because it saves me from having to remove the inner panels everytime I install/remove the hard top.

Re: Single vs Double wall Tops

I have a single wall top on my blazer. I thought that most of them came with one until I read this.

The other thing to consider, if you live in colder climates, is that the single wall's allow condensation to build up on the inside of the top, and then drip down on your head. I've never heard of this with a double.

Some rigs, like "GQ" came factory w/ both sets of holes

So if we combine the two quotes and knowing that VT's is a 71 can we say that only 72 Blazers came with the two sets of mounting holes? Or would that be ASSuming too much?!?

Re: Single vs Double wall Tops

My '72 has one set of holes for the double wall, and slotted holes with sliding nut thingies for the single wall. If I remember correctly the '70 I had only had the holes for the double wall top.

Re: Single vs Double wall Tops

OK so I am weighing on this one. Last weekend my 16 year old son and I removed the double wall from my 69 and set it outside the shop. Not a bad lift for the 2 of us....then we picked up my single wall from a 72 to test fit in on my 69 and holy moly, it was all we could do to lift it into place! So I have heard on these kinds of posts that double walls are heavier?? not so in this case, I even asked my son which he thought was heavier and he said no question the single wall was heavier...also I was in a conversation with a guy in Oregon who has tons of pickup and some blazer stuff and he said that single wall tops were only available as an option for last half of 1972 model year run, because GM was getting the next generation tops ready for the 73 and up model that was removable. It made sense if you look at the 2nd gen blazer tops they are constructed almost identical to our single wall tops.

My 72 only has holes for a single. Man, I feel funny not having posted in so long. I have a bunch of great stuff to share, just need the time to post it all. Maybe within the next few weeks...
