283 Exhaust Manifolds...
Can anyone post me a picture of what stock exhaust manifolds look like for a 283 on a 4x4? I think one of my manifolds isn't correct and would like to know which one is/or isn't...
Thanks Brian

Re: 283 Exhaust Manifolds...
I have no picts, but they should both be straight dumps. All SBC manifolds are the same for these 4X4, except a Vette manifold with 2 1/2" opening instead of the 2 1/4.

Re: 283 Exhaust Manifolds...
Hmm, thanks for the info. I'll have to measure again but I'm pretty sure had roughly the same measurements when I checked it out last...

Re: 283 Exhaust Manifolds...
Thanks for those Pics! I notice on the passenger side manifold there is a Heat Riser that goes between the exhaust and the manifold. Anyone know if the Driver side manifold is/or should be setup the same?

Re: 283 Exhaust Manifolds...
Nope only the pass side you can eliminate it if need be, but you will have to chamfer the manifold to acceopt the donut seal.

Re: 283 Exhaust Manifolds...
I don't know much...lol. So can you tell me why it's setup like that? Passenger side only?
Thanks Brian

Re: 283 Exhaust Manifolds...
Here is what I had on my 350 4x4. I took them off, cleaned them up, and bolted them on my 383.
Neither one has a heat riser. Both are chamfered to accept the exhaust donut. I have seen one center dump manifold that does not have the chamfer for the exhaust donut. I would guess that truck used a heat riser. BTW, I ordered the dual exhaust kit from LMC. It bolted right up to these manifolds with no modifications.

Re: 283 Exhaust Manifolds...
If you look close at your pict, you have two rights, that is why you don't have the heat riser. If it works more power! I have like 4-5 sets of these from vettes, camaros, chevelles, novas, etc and I need to get them on ebay, but these are all the 45 degree angles. I like the simplicity, but headers are the only way to go for less restriction.

Now let me zip up my flame suit. I disagree about your headers comment. Unless you wrap the crap out of your headers, you are actually hurting your performance compared to factory rams horns. Most headers are worth their weight in scrap iron. You pay extra, they leak, and in most cases they hurt your performance. I'll take my non-leaking, bolt up to $200 exhaust kit, double RH factory rams horns any day.

I have as many LH as I do RH as they are matched sets, I don't doubt the kit mounts up as they are straight dump for both sides. I was going to comment about your reply, then I saw your rational, ($200 pinch bent LMC exhaust kit, which will restrict exhaust flow a heck of a lot more than my headers will?!) When you are ready to move up Headers (good headers ie ceramic coated) cost twice what you paid for you whole exhaust system, so I'll stop there. |

Re: 283 Exhaust Manifolds...
That is what I put on my Engine I built "ram horn" Exhaust manifolds. I blasted mine and painted them with High Temp paint.

How is a 496 BBC a Ricer (type R?!) Get a grip, we are all not into the cheap low performing stock crowd. Some of us like to go fast and stock 2 1/4" ramhorns with pinch bent $200 exhaust systems are like trying to blow a golfball through a garden hose. Hell I'll give you my ramhorns if they are so greatly appreciated by you. I understand different strokes for different folks, but don't tell me your $200 exhaust system can handle 500hp, oh wait they dont make ramhorns for BBC anyways. BTW do you have glasspacks on it too? |
