67 in the junkyard

Ive just sort of passed over this 67 3/4 ton with a CR 4 speed and eaton locker, wood bed etc. It was a very hi option truck, I saw in the junkyard a few months back until I checked it out closer the other day. I pulled the seat up and checked out the build sheet because it has the same transmission I have which I have never seen before . Its the M28 NP 435 CR 4 speed ( Try to find a boot for it . I dare you! ) . Anyway the build sheet wasnt all there as is typical for a 36 year old piece of paper caught in springs but what caught my eye was the engine placement. This was not the original engine. It was a mid to late 70's small block judging by the EGR and long accesories but It was set back like mine is and the truck cab is a hi hump . Mine is set back in the Big Block positon because i know for a fact mine was originally a big block truck and the engines in big block trucks are set back a few inches behind where the small blocks are due to the mounts. Now either this truck was originally a big block truck which I have been told is impossible in 67 or someone converted it to big block specs and then put a small block in it.

From what I've read, I6 mounts are also further back. Maybe it originally came with a I6?

Sounds like a SB mounted in the 6 cyl position.

Mine is the same way. Its set way back in there compared to factory small block trucks. I know it was a big block truck because I pulled the matching numbers big block out with my two hands. You may be able to tell by looking at the GVW. Dont quote me on this but it were a 6 cyl or small block truck it would be rated at 7200 GVW and the big block would rate at 7500 GVW. I know mines rated at 7500 GVW.

GMC71K20- theres NO way that your truck could have come with a BB because they didn't put BB's in 4x4's untill after 72!

I'm into heavy duty stuff rthat I can rev to the moon and not worry about and I had a hi nickle 4 bolt main block with a steel crank bored and prepped and dying to go in something so I picked up a set of super strong scat rods and some really good heads for it. The original 2 bolt main cast crank oval port head 396 would have left me totally unfulfilled . Plus I wanted a daily driver that I could put 60-100 miles a day on and not POUR gas into all the time. I have more power with the present small block than I did with the 396 . plus I was able to sell the big block off for twice what I paid for the truck. I had no intention of keeping it in stock form since I hated the color ( 68 anniversary gold and white ) and interior so since the collector value was gone ( there never was any anyway ) I decided to go with the small block.

I didnt read your post enough to see it was a 4 WD. Of course it came with a small block.

My guess would be that it probably came with an I6, and whoever put the SB in it, left it in that position. According to Chevy (and I've never seen one) BB's were not available in 67. Choices were standard 250/I6, optional 292/I6, standard 283/V8 or optional 327/V8. The 396 was not introduced until 68.

After 36 years, who knows what has been changed on that truck.
