305 Question.
Hello. I have a '68 GMC C20 Custom Camper with a '78-'79 305 2-bolt V-8 with a Rochester 4-barrel Quadrajet. This is my first truck and I'd like to make it into a daily driver. Should I look for a 350 or keep the 305? Thanks.

Nothing really wrong with a 305. Just a little short on HP. Ive had a few & they are a little known for eating timing chains & cam lobes. If it were mine, Id pull the cam & install a new 350 cam in it & also toss a new chain & gears on while its apart. The 305 will thank you for it & the power gain will put a smile on your face...

Like cornfed said, they are short on power but otherwise just as good as any other SBC. I have an '86 GMC with a 305. I use it for a work truck. It's old and weak but keeps on chugging. All the money goes to my baby in the sig.
If you're happy with your 305's performance I'd keep on drivin'.

It all depends on if the power is enough for you or not. The 305 is only a turd to lead footed maniacs like myself. In all reality, it is just as good as any other small block. (there's a few exceptions to that rule though)

i'd say keep, i've got one for a '86 camaro one picece reamain seal, has to been rebuilt with a comp high engery 268h cam and some headwork and it'll run. no prob out of it so far, just sucks gas. chris.

If it runs good, keep it. If it doesn't run good, or at all for the most part, dump it and find something else, IMO.

As long as it runs, use it. Keep your eye out for a good deal on a 350, and as soon as the 305 needs a major (expensive) repair, junk it and go with the 350. That's what I would do.

Putting a freshly rebuit 305 roller cammed engine from a 89 Camaro in the 1970 truck soon. Hope to pass a few gas stations now.

Add me to your 305 members list. Same vintage in ole yellar, been going semi-strong for 6 years with the 200,000 plus miles on the engine. Stock 305 2bbl from a 77 Nova. With 3.08 gears and turbo 350 trans, gets better fuel mileage than anything in my fleet.

While I havn't drove it for 5 or 6 yrs, I put a '86 - 305 in my '69 and ran it for several years. I got 13 MPG out of it with a T-400 and 3.73 gears. It felt peppy for the first 1/4 of the gas pedal then flat. Get it wound up and it moved out fine, not like a 350 but not bad. So it should be a lower HP motor for your son. It should get a little better gas milage then mine with the 3.08 rear gear. Over all I was happy with it.
