power steering conversion
I am new to this site but have seen a lot of helpful hints. I just bought a 71 C10 with manual steering. I was wondering what all is needed to convert it to power steering.
I bought a power steering gear box and will be buying a pump and brackets. Just wondering if the splines off the manual steering shaft are the same. And also in the length of the steering shafts the same. I am assuming that it is a bolt on swap. Thanks for any input |

IIRC, The shafts are the same, make sure you buy new lines, using used
ones will just give you headaches, might be more info HERE somewhere

Welcome aboard boot. It should a bolt up. Watch the routing of the lines, be sure they don't rub on the lip of the inner fender and get cut.

I personally went to the boneyard and got everything off of a 75 c10 350 pump hoses brackets and gearbox and pitman arm. You may have to grind away a little of the front bumber bracket and even smaller amount from the radiator mount bracket as the gear boxes from the later trucks are longer, that is of course depending how similar you truck is to a 67. Hope this helps, oh yeah depending on your water pump where the bracket mounts to it i had to drill out the threads in the well as the bracket i used had a nut on the rear arm. This all cost me about 95 dollars the old hoses were serviceable.

You will need a different pitman arm because the lower splines are bigger than the manual box.. I believe the input shafts are the same.
The pump mounting has to be for a short waterpump, if you have a V-8 and want it origional style. Find a donor to make it easier.

I actually used a gearbox off a 78 chevy 2WD and it was a direct bolt on. I did however find a pump off a 72 C10. The one thing that I learned is when you have a system full of air, take the cap off and fill it up. Put cardboard underneath the truck and a rag around the pump, then start the truck and work the steering wheel then shut it off, at this time when the air comes to the top it will overflow. Just repeat a few times until the air seems to have worked its way out.
I found this out the hard way and made a mess. FYI..if you leave the cap on during this process it will really make a mess.
