Re: new to this need help
Welcome aboard fellow K5 owner. Sounds like you have a small issue there. But don't despair...i have a couple things you can do to possable save the sending unit you currently have as it has worked for me before. A little more work as the tank has to come down but here is what needs to happen. Run her until the fuel is pretty low so its easier to remove the tank...
Unhook the lines and use a screw driver to remove the sending unit lock ring. If you screw it up get ahold of me and i'll arrange to have one shipped to you. Remove the sending unit...of course unhook the wires before removing fromt the tank. I believe this sender will have two wires...gm usually uses purple for the gauge input and black for ground. Looking at the sending unit there will be a small board with very thin and small wire wrapped around it that the arm rides on and depending on the actual fule level changes the ohm reading. There should be 2 small torx head screws with small springs under the board. Gently remove these and place them on the work bench. Using some very fine sand paper or crocus cloth carefully clean the surface and the surface of the arm where it contacts the board. Clean the screws and the springs. Now reassemble the sender and using a good quality digital volot ohm meter set in ohms...move the arm up and down slowly...the reading if all goes well will be clean and steady. I forget the ohm scale but the key is clean and steady readings. If that doesn't work i'll visit a bone yard or to when i have some time away from the oilfields and see if i can't find something for you. DW

Re: new to this need help
Thats easy enough. Have 15 years in with the US army and i've worked on a few of these a few times. You will need a helper of a remote start switch to blled the air out of the system. On the top of the fuel filter housing that is mounted on the firewall is a screw to bleed the system. Since its been a few years i don't remember size etc. But basically while you are cranking the engine over loosen the screw...air bubles will burp out and about the time it turns from air to a steady stream of fuel the engine will catch and run....do not turn the motor off until you have the bleed screw locked down or you will have to do it again. Tends to make a small mess from the fuel being bleed but not a bad deal.
