Cutting Coils

How much of the coils wouold I need to cut off if I wanted to lower my C20 by 3 - 4" in the front, and 4 - 6" in the back?

I could also use blocks for a partial lowering in the back.

All of these modifications would be done professionaly, and re tempered.

I would like to try to modify my origional parts rather than buying new.

You can't cut the back coils, they are "pigtailed" at both ends. For the front coils, rule of thumb is 1/4 coil for each inch. You don't want to cut more than 3/4 coil!!! I recommend doing it right and using dropped spindles and lowering springs.

i cut 1 coil exactly off the bottom of the front springs and got exactly a 2.5 inch drop. but when i took the springs out the bottom two coils where touching and the 2nd and 3rd werent, so my guess is if one is 2.5 then two would be a little more than 5, but thats just a guess. good luck, Ben

I have done this , but also dont reccomend it! i cut 1 full ring off a NEW set of coils , & got roughly a 3 " drop. Along with that mod were a set of custom made shock brackets, to keep the stock lenght shocks. All in all, the longhorn doesnt ride or handle too bad,but i do get a little "bump steer" over the really rough spots in these midwest roads( this is due to the tierods not being parallel). also the angles are pretty severe on the balljoints( I check em 2-3 times a season for wear). When I go in to straighten it up , i will run a set of 2 1/2" dropped spindles,with a 1 or 1 1/2" drop spring........& will replace all 4 low milage balljoints just for peace of mind! good luck.....crazy longhorn

Pocket drops

I'm planning a drop of a couple of inches on my Jimmy but rather than cutting the springs, I was going to cut the bottom of the spring pockets out of a spare set of control arms, weld in 2 inch pipe extensions to drop the pockets and then weld the pocket bottoms back on. That way you keep the full spring to maintain ride and, except for shorter shocks, everything else stays as it was.

For the backs I was going with 2.5" solid blocks between frame and trailing arms.

Any comments on this approach?
