What year power steering pumps/brackets fit?

My truck has a steering box from a 79 or 80 truck that had hydroboost, and I'm trying to figure out what power steering pump and brackets I can look for. I'm having trouble locating a pump and brackets from the earlier era of trucks.

It seems that 73-87, and even some of the late 80's-early 90's trucks will fit? 70's and 80's trucks just aren't found much in junk yards anymore around here, and I'm thinking that if a pump and brackets from an early 90's truck would work, I might have better luck with the parts yards around here.

What year did they start using serpentine belts?

Re: What year power steering pumps/brackets fit?

not 100% sure abouthte hydroboot issue, but i asked a similar question about 3 months ago and my results were that essentially you need ps brackets from any vehicle that that has the alternator ont he drivers side... i found many from the 60's chevy cars and trucks to even vans up to 79-80 era... the only difference i saw is that the van rear bracket bolts to the exhaust manifold and our truck rear bracket bolts through the engine mount... anny other style (like 73-87 ttucks) use the water pump bracket and the alt is on the passenger side... hope that helps... the serpentine bracketry started with the TBI FI in 87 IIRC....

Re: What year power steering pumps/brackets fit?

Thanks for the info - My alternator is on the pass. side, and I have a long water pump on it. I suppose the other issue is what pump will have the same pressure hose fitting as what I'm working with. I'm ready to just bypass the thing and run the steering manually

72 and older trucks will have a short waterpump which means you will need the correct brackets to keep everything aligned.
73+pumps and brackets will line up with the long waterpump. I believe you can mix and match pumps, but brackets are another thing.
I also know that pulleys make a difference also. I used a 66 Impala pump with 67-72 truck brackets and had to change the pump pulley to a 67-72 vintage truck to get the belt to line up.

Serpentine systems are a popular swap. Just grab everything off the front of an engine and bolt it on. Just remember that serpentine waterpumps are different from V belt pumps. They rotate the opposite direction so don't mix them.

If your fittings are not correct then you have one with metric threads. I don't know the exact year but it is in the mid to late 80's that they switched. There are adaptors out there for this.

Re: What year power steering pumps/brackets fit?

Almost any early to late 70's cars (sbc) will be the same. If you get one off of a later (80's) 350 or 305 you will have to rob the pressure fitting out of an older style pump though because the newer ones had an o-ring style fitting...

Re: What year power steering pumps/brackets fit?

Thanks!

So, the fitting in an old pump will come out, and I can put that in a newer pump if that's what I end up finding?

I have a pump, it's just that's it is for hydroboost, and has that extra return line that gets in the way of mounting it with normal non-hydroboost brackets.

Are the brackets staying with the hydro-boost pump when you change it?I`d buy that combo from you,if you want to sell it.I have the hydro-boost from a diesel and need the 350 brackets.

I have the pump bracket, and maybe the one that goes on the bottom of the block (haven't confirmed it's the right one yet). It looks almost new (actually has a recent looking gm part number sticker on it), but it was ground on just a little bit to clearance something. The pump I have would only be good for a core, because the lines are slightly smashed, and looks like one is starting to split at the pump.

Here is a diagram --

Re: What year power steering pumps/brackets fit?

On my hydroboost conversion in my 67 k20 I used the pump and brackets from an 80 1ton van. A local hydraulic shop was able to interchange the HOSE ends so I could use my old PS box.
