thermastat housing leak!!

well i must turn to you professionals again. i have a edelbrock air gap manifold on my 383(350) & i bought i chrome neck from my local autozone. i can't seem to get it to not leak!!! it is really frustrating anyways i have cleaned it off & tried to put it back on again & i still have a leak!!!
i want to keep it chrome so my engine will look nice. can you guys please tell me what you have done & or tell me some ideas to try to keep it from leaking i have put gasket maker on both sides of the "rubber" gasket & same result.

any help would be much appreciated.

thanks!!!

Re: thermastat housing leak!!

I had the same problem, get a chrome one with a O-ring gasket instead and that will fix it right up.

Re: thermastat housing leak!!

Ive always heard of people have problems with these things but I just put on the neck with the o-ring and a little gasket sealant and it works fine. Best of luck to ya with it.

Re: thermastat housing leak!!

the chrome keeps it from sealing correctly if you scuff the chrome where the gasket sits you mite have better luck .

Re: thermastat housing leak!!

had a chrome one on mine for a 1000 or so miles and replaced it last week casue it was leaking (pretty much from day one) and the chrome was bubbling off. i bought a stock style from CHECKERS for 12$ and not a leak to speak of.
good luck

Re: thermastat housing leak!!

the chrome ones suck, even the o ring t/d, pro form or whatever the hell the brand is from kragen, they are weak and easily over tightend and alwasy leak. the gasket style is less likely to bend because it has a flat surface to flat surface mate, the o ring style has to pinch the o ring down and it will flex over the top of the o ring.

Re: thermastat housing leak!!

Biggest problem is they get overtightened. They will pull up in the center and leak. If you take them off and put them against a grinder wheel, you can see the middle isn't touching. You can "mill" it flat and try again. It's only holding water, no need to get out the muscle.

Re: thermastat housing leak!!

I went through 3 or 4 cheap chrome ones before I gave up. If they don't leak to start with they will eventually. The cheap material will even corrode away to nothing. Put a nicely painted stocker back on, no more problems.

Put a stocker on it and get it coated if you want it to look nice. The chrome one I have leaked from day one for me.

Re: thermastat housing leak!!

Put RTV Blue on the bolt threads too. Dont some of those threaded holes go into the water jacket on some of those aluminum manifolds?

Re: thermastat housing leak!!

I discarded the o-ring and filled the groove with black high temp RTV. Put a thin coat on intake and housing and cured my leak.

Re: thermastat housing leak!!

Thanks Again For The Great Help. I Guess I Will Try What You Said Green Machine. It Just Makes Me Sooo Mad That I Have To Do All This Over Again & Now I Have To Clean Off The Fitting & Manifold To Boot!! I Just Wish Things & People Would Make Something Right! What Happen To The Days When People Took Pride In Their Work Or When They Were Doing Something For Someone (ie: Auto Repair - Mechanics). It Seems Like When You Want Something Fit Right Or To Be Done Right You Have To Pay Extra!!!
Well Anyways I Guess I Will Try To Fix The Leak..... Again!

Thanks Again For All Your Help!!!
