I received good news this morning. All my phone calls and rattling cages payed off. My dealer is going to repair the cylinder heads. I hope everything goes well from here on out.

Just an FYI....... Valves and guides within factory specs, oil consumption should not be a problem with no seals. For decades GM only put small o-rings on the valves, to stop oil consumption. Having rebuilt heads myself, I have used the type on the engine, when knurling guidess, but with new guides and new valves, just the small o rings.

Glad to hear there fixin you up. Weve never had any more troubles with our engine since they fixed the heads, but ours had bad springs too. Hope they do them up right for you.

I am considering buying a ZZ4, but now I dont know which way to go. It seems you cant get a reliable product unless you rebuild it yourself. Good feedback from everyone.

bought my rebuilt 350 4 bolt main, cam, 9;5:1 compression ratio and a few extra lil dingy's

. man said all stock items it would pump 300 hp. i now got headers, ele fan, performer intake re built stock carb (4b)... hoping for around 320 hp or so..... paid 1750 for engine. just engine. (private builder in town, called "repower inc")

If one should go with a rebuilt engine, make sure you cough up the extra $$ for magnafluxing the block and heads to check for casting flaws, etc.

I had a ZZ3 in my 85 Z28. I put 16,000 hard miles on it in 9 months, puking a transmission in the works, and had 0 problems with the engine. But I've also heard horror stories about the same engine, and other GM crates, well...crate engines in general. I've heard more bad stuff about Jasper than I can even think of.......I'll build the next one....

Yes, but the GMPP engines are completely different than the "Targetmaster" crate replacement engines.

Yes - me :-D The biggest challenge is that the dollars are almost a wash anymore...I'm working on a 1995 LT1 O/H right now, but I could have bought the same engine in a crate from Golen Engine Service for only about $800-$1000 more than what it's costing me :/

Not unless they just want the experience. My bro-in-law who has built motors for years told me "buy a GM crate motor, you can not beat the price". I took his advice and bought a Ramjet 350. I love it so far...

I bought a crate motor on the recommendation of a few people. I will NEVER buy another one. I like the new word you made up for them, fits perfectly.

GM Crates suck. The 'made in' stamp on the block says it all.

I agree and run an older engine like that myself, however if you notice, his heads use the newer style valves that only have one groove, no place for an o ring, they rely entirely on the seals under the springs, with no o ring there is a fair amount of oil going down the stem that can only be stopped by the seals, so they have to be good.

That's why I build my own engines. Cost wise it's a wash (not including my labor), but at least I know what I've got when I'm done. Only downside is that I don't have a warranty.
