Saw a C-50 on the road
I saw a C50 dump truck on the road the other day, that thing had seen a better day but war running at a good clip. its interesting that even at that size the tank was in the cab and the hood had the same slant as min... it looked to be a 69-72 by the looks of the hood.

Re: Saw a C-50 on the road
There are alot of those trucks still in use around here. Good place to find a tach if you see one sitting up some where.

Re: Saw a C-50 on the road
They are very similar to our standard trucks. The inside dash is the same but the bottom center of the guage cluster is not notched for the steering wheel, tank is inside and its the same tank. Window regulatores inside and outside door hardware and panels are the same. Same dash pad. the doors are a little different with an angle cut at the bottom front. Hood is shorter. I have used one as my back-up dump truck for many years. Newer engine, tranny, complete brakes...runs like a champ.....mine is just awaiting a paint job!!
As mentioned above...some have 427's in them...you can normally spot a big block truck because they have a forced air intake system that has a little grille/vent on the side of the hood at the front. When the fenders and doors come up for sale they go FAST!!!! There are 2 types of front fenders.....wide flared and normal flared...mine are normal flare.....most busses and larger duty trucks of the time were wide flared. Re: Saw a C-50 on the road
there were 5 speeds too, never seen an automatic.
I have never seen an in cab tank on one of these either...they always had a filler neck delete plate and a large tank under the cab. If looking for a tach, make sure it is the lame 5 grand tach... not the super lame 3 grand tach. Also this is the only *factory* place to locate vacume guages, and there is also an air pressure guage in that location if the truck came with air brakes. All you have to do is replace the bezel and the whole inst panel will fit in your 10 - 30 series truck. |

Re: Saw a C-50 on the road
mines the 4 spd withe 2 spd rear. It does have the in tank gas tank, I think all of them had small rear windows too. Theres a guy here in town that cut down a frame and put a 67-72 stepside bed on. Looks stumpy

I forgot all about it..........But mine was MANUAL steering....I found one in a junk yard with the big truck style "hydraulic ram" looking factory power steering unit. $100 later it was mine and now I have power steering. The only tough part was drilling the 1" tapered hole in the front axle/crossmember to attach the ram....It took some time!!! Last edited by 72freak; 09-29-2006 at 06:43 PM. |

Re: Saw a C-50 on the road
I've seen so many of the 40s and 50s around here in NC it's not funny. I see at least a couple a week.

Re: Saw a C-50 on the road
I drove a flatbed '70 c50 for the U of Wyoming about 8 years ago. Manual steering and a clark 5-speed w/2-speed rear. That thing made you feel like a friggin beast when you drove it. I enjoyed the hell out of it. I always wanted to swap clusters with my prevoius 68 c10 but I never did, I was probably the only one of many that drove it that would have noticed the difference....

Re: Saw a C-50 on the road
I want one!I mean two.Er,three that is.1)short wrecker...2)long rollback...3)lo-side dump.It would be neat to have a tractor/5th-wheel platter set-up and a variety of trailers.I`ve always wanted to do one up with the top-o-the-line interior,pretty paint,chrome front end...maybe stacks and a visor.

Re: Saw a C-50 on the road
Just a reminder to for who will run out and buy one...If you are in an area that the police deal with truck DOT's or there are a lot of DOT cops out in your area.........
Federal law......If your GVW or CGVW is over 10,000 you must have a DOT health card. If your GVW or CGVW is over 26,000 you must have a CDL and a DOT health card. The GVW on my 72 GMC 5500 is ....I think 19,000 Technically this applies to even normal size trucks that are pulling trailers over 10,000......If the trailer has a GVW that exceeds 10k you are supposed to have a health card. |

Re: Saw a C-50 on the road
I never knew what the weight limits were for the CDL/health card stuff.... very good info. My one ton is only rated for 9100 IIRC.

Re: Saw a C-50 on the road
I drove one during the summer in high school, 366 I think. That truck was fast, way too fast for a truck with 2sp rear. Think it was a 69, raggedy fender on one side, I drove the pissouta that truck.
