Radiator Shroud Questions

Since my 350 is in the I6 position the fan doesn't really fit in the shroud. My shroud has some cracks and most of the bottom is busted out. Is this shroud doing any good at all? If not I will just take it off and pitch it until I get a new one. Thanks.

it's pretty much doin nothing... you could put a spacer on the fan to put it up in there... but that's about a 4 or 5 inch reach, might be a bit extreem.
Even though I know it is wrong, I have had 3 trucks, and NONE of them ran with shrouds... none of them overheated either... even in the Tx heat, and I drove 70+ all day every day there... 100 MPH was not uncommon for me in those days. Even the cad 500 in the thick ohio humidity ... never even considers overheating.
The shroud is an important part of the cooling system, but yours is doing nothing.

Your fan should be just inside the shroud anyway to be effective and as LM said it isn't doing much. I see you have a three or four core radiator so you shouldn't have any problems without it. The PO of my truck never ran on and it only heated up when idling for a long time in parades, and then not too much to overheat. It's a three core. I wonder if you have a big block shroud instead of a short block one. I'm not sure which one is the deeper. It is better to run a shroud but if you don't hit heavy slow traffic or idle for long periods you should be fine.

I'M FROM THE OTHER CAMP. ANY SCHROUD IS BETTER THAN NO SCHROUD AT ALL. BELIEVE ME... IF YOU DIDN'T NEED THEM ALL OF THE AUTO MAKERS WOULD NOT HAVE SPENT GAZILLIONS OF DOLLARS INSTALLING THEM ON DARN NEAR EVERY VEHICAL MADE IN THE LAST 50 YEARS. I LIKE MY FAN TO BE 1/2 IN & 1/2 OUT OF THE SCHROUD. THIS IS WHAT I CONSIDER A PERFECT SENARIO & AN INCH EITHER WAY ISN'T GOING TO MAKE ANY BIG DIFFERENCE. FAN SHCROUDS AREN'T EXPENSIVE OR HARD TO FIND. I'D LEAVE THAT ONE ALONE UNTIL YA GET ANOTHER ONE. HEY.. EVEN IF ITS DOING NOTHING BUT KEEPING YOUR FINGERS OR TOOLS OUT OF THE BLADES. I mounted my 327 in the I6 location and ran into the same probelm with my fan not coming close to the shroud. I got an electric fan off of ebay from a late model vette also picked up a new adjustable temp sensor switch for it off of ebay. As for the shroud Im currently building one out of an old aluminum road work sign. Since my truck isnt on the road yet and wont be for a few more months I cant tell you how well this set up will or wont work out.

Look for a 4wd small block shroud, they were about 5-6'' deeper since the engine was just about against the firewall from the factory

I once had a 72 Monte Carlo. This car had the 116" wheelbase, but the car had a longer hood than the 112" Malibu. Chevy made up fo it by having a 4" extension spacer at the end of the fan shroud to reach the fan.

Maybe you could fab an extension to cover the distance fron the existing shroud to the fan?
