64 Alternator/Wiring Problems.. Help.. Please..
Hello
I'm having charging issues.. I just replaced the alternator because it was bad. The guy even tested the new alternator just to make sure that he sold me a good. It tested 14v.. I installed the new and it's still not charging. I'm getting 12.20v at the battery. It died when I disconnected the battery. I'm stumped.. I have the red wiring coming, from the voltage reg, connected to the red terminal on the alternator. Ground is grounded. White, from the voltage reg, to "R" and Dark Blue to "F" on the alternator. I don't know what else to do. With the truck running, I tested all the terminals and only one "F" or "R" tested at 1v and the other -1v... I would appreciate any help that I can get.. Thanks, Elias |

ok 1st make sure your batt is fully charged.
2nd make sure your conections are clean and tight , including your Bat cables 3rd. How is your yoltage reg? get it tested. If it were me I would swap an internal regulated Alt ( pn. 7127) Good luuk and keep us posted. |

Re: 64 Alternator/Wiring Problems.. Help.. Please..
Since I already bought the alternator, I ended up replacing the voltage reg because I opened up the old one, it was fried.. I also cleaned up the connectors on the voltage reg harness.
So.. I'm still getting 12.2V at the battery.. I'm also getting 10v from "F" at the voltage regulator. The next chance I'll get to work on it will proably be Saturday. Next, I'll run new wires from the voltage reg to the alt. Does anyone know what wires should go where?? Here's what the wiring diagram indicates and what I've done... Dark Blue wire = "F" on the voltage reg to "F" on the alternator. "F" is on the right side closest to "+" on the alternator. White wire = "2" on the voltage reg to "R" on the alternator. "R" is on the left side closest to the ground. Red wire = "3" on the voltage reg to the horn relay, then to "+" on the alternator. "+" on the alternator has a red bushing and is on the right side. Brown wire = "4" on the voltage reg to the harness that goes into the cab. Gound, on the left side of the alternator, to ground. Thanks for the help so far.. Elias |

Just my 2 cents worth, but quit fooling with that regulator an go with an internally regulated alternator you can do the swap in less time than it takes to figure out this problem. You get brighter lights to boot.

The only way they will take it back is if it's not working.. hmmm... Someone mentioned that I may have screwed up the new alt if I ran it with the bad voltage reg.. hmmm .. In that case. I'll find out Saturday when I yank it out and have it tested (not at the place I bought it since he tested it before he rang me up) I'll just have to figure out (or ask you guys ) how to wiring the alt. with a reg built in.. Thanks Again.. Sat is the big day.. Elias Last edited by Eliasj123; 11-10-2006 at 02:23 AM. Reason: Spelling |

Re: 64 Alternator/Wiring Problems.. Fixed - I hope
Thanks everyone for their input. I think the wiring is good now..
I tried to exchange the alt for one with an internal voltage reg, but the auto parts did not let me.. So.. I jumped the number 2 connector on the the alternator to the output "+" on the alt and it gave me a reading of 17v.. Wow.. So, I knew the alt was working. And the voltage reg was new.. But it still wasn't charging. .. So, I figured it had to do something with the wiring. I tested all the wires and all of them were good. Then, I unwraped all the wires under the hood and all were connected per the wiring diagram. One thing I couldnt' figure out was why one wire from the voltage reg would be hooked up to the ignition switch.. So, I did some research and found that it was suppose.. But I wasn't sure that is was hook up to the right terminal.. So, I tried a few different comboniations and still nothing.. Then, one the voltage reg, I swapped the output wire from the alt with the hot wire from the battery.. And.... VOILA!!!! 13.5v to 14v... WOW.. From every diagram I have seen, it's hooked up backwards now. DOH!! But.. IT"S WORKING so I'm a happy camper for now. I just saw that there's an electric forum here... So, I'll around there to help me figure out why.. Thanks Again... (Now I can drive it with the headlights on ) Elias |

Re: 64 Alternator/Wiring Problems.. Help.. Please..
I've put this on before, but here are the steps you need to follow.
Here you go, It is so easy. I did it to my '64, and i would think it would be just as easy on yours. First remove the battery cables from the battery. 1. take the regulator off and throw it as far as you can. 2. It should have had 4 wires connected to it. 3. Using a test light, locate the wire that is hot (12 volts)when the ignition switch is in the "run" position. 4. now, locate the wire that runs from the regulator position to the gen/alt. 5. splice the wire located in number 3 above to the one located in number 4. 6. now you have a wire at the gen/alt location that is hot (12volts)with the key in the "run" position. 7. forget the other two wires at the regulator. 8. Now remove the gen/alt and throw it as far as you can(probably can't throw it as far as you did the regulator!!) 9. Should be three wires going to the it. two small wires and one large wire. The large wire is connected to the battery and is hot (12 volts) all the time. 10. Go to the parts house and purchase an alternator with internal regulator and a new "pig tail" (the little thing that plugs onto the two terminals on the side and near the back of the alternator) they are numbered 1 & 2. the pig tail will have a small white wire and a large red wire. The new alternator will also have a large terminal(electrical connection) on the back. It will look like a screw sticking out with a nut on it. 11. Do what it takes to bolt the new alternator into the place of the gen/alt you removed and threw in step 8. 12. Once installed, plug the pig tail onto the terminals mentioned in step 10. attach the large wire from the battery (mentioned in step 9) and the red wire on the pig tail (mentioned in step 10) to the large terminal on the back of the alternator, tighten the nut. 13. Now attach the white wire on the pigtail to the wire identified in steps 4, 5, & 6. 14. Secure all left over wires. 15. Crank her up and you are good to go. Amp meter should work also. If you have a idot light, i'm not sure. Shorty |
