Kick panel speakers or???
Lets see some pics of speaker mounts that are NOT in the doors. How about some in the Kickpanels or under the seat or the ceiling. I need some ideas!. Thanks

i think those are stroker 383(or something close to that) kick panel. looks pretty good id do it but my hairy gorilla legs need functional vents

MITCH1914, the kick panels were made by a local stereo shop. They are made out of wood and fiber glass. I got the speakers from Crutchfield.
HotRod929, I took that ugly pull bar parking brake out. I don't need a parking brake. |

I bought the kick panels designed for speakers, but didn't get the speakers. Found some 6 1/2" 2-ways and installed them. Also put 2 4" speakers in the factory dash opening. Not sure how I did that, 'cause it was so hard I blocked it out.
Anyway, the E-Brake will clear the panels, but it won't clear the speaker grill. I don't use my E-Brake, so no problem. You have to be careful with the "bright" switch for the headlights. It works, but you have to feel for it with your foot a bit. The vents work after a little trimming of the panels. I make a good part of my living writing music. I want to hear it after it's recorded. Here's what little I have learned about sound reproduction. Bass can come from anywhere. Low frequencies are (hope this is the right term) omni-directional. You could put a sub-woofer under your couch and it would still be okay. Mid-range needs to be a "little" closer to the level of your ears, and highs (tweeters) should be at ear level. Look at the design of column speakers. The tweeters are always at the top, mid-range in the middle, and bass at the bottom. In my humble opinion, if you want the best possible sound you'd put sub-woofers under the seat, mid range in the top of the door panels, and tweeters in either the door pillars or in the top of the dash pointing towards the passenger compartment. But, who wants to do that? I'm opting for kick panel speakers and a transplant that puts my ears on my ankles. |

I did mine in the doors, but not in the "traditional" way. They are in the panels and at anytime just swapping in new door panels car return it to stock look. (There are a couple new hole in the door behind the panel, but there are holes there already...) This mounts the speakers higher than most and furthest to the side for best imaging.

Mike C, love the setup.. been thinking of doing that myself, though I've got the funky molded '72 door panels. How hard is it to fit a speaker in there with the window regulator also being there? Did you have to modify anything inside the door?

There are no mods to the inside of the door. You have to be careful with speaker selection as the depth is critical since the window has to pass by the magnet. The tweeter is below the vent window so you have plenty of depth for it. I had to VERY slightly bend the window crank to clear. In my 72 Jimmy I did something very similar. I just made my own 1/4" plywood doorpanels covered in black vinyl. (When I did the interior in 1990 I changed from dark saddle to black and you could not buy deluxe panels or armrests at the time) The only drawback is that the door handles stick out a little further than the truck. (The 72 regulator and door handle stubs are longer to clear the plastic panel) I am going to replace my OEM doors with some from a 70 parts truck. At the same time I am going to buy new repro black door panels and install my speakers in them. I did not use the separates in the JImmy because the rollcage tubes blocked them. I bought an adjustable hole cutter from Home Depot for $15. I then taped the cover with masking tape to prevent tear out. Chuck the cutter in the drill press and go to town! The steel is awful hard on the cutter, but it does a nice job on the cover. The second one I did I used the adjustable cutter for the cover, then used a bimetal holesaw to cut the steel for the tweeter.

383, How do those tweets and mids sound? I have heard that the seats will make them sound bad
BTW nice bottle. Mike_C, Is that a 10"sub? what are the dimensions of that box? Does it fit under the stock bench seat? thanks |

With the bench seat still in, I made a console to house 2 6x9 so I didn't have to cut the doors.
