1988 GMC radio problems

I recently bought a 1988 GMC c1500. I am having radio problems, I have tried 4 control units and 2 amps and the only thing I can get to work is the cassete player. Any sugestions?

Pitch the factory radio and go for an aftermarket install.

Yep. The radio is trash. Go for an aftermarket. Way better anyways.

Are these radio's just normaly junk?

I don't think the stock radios are junk. Some people have their own opinions about that, but I like the simple controls of the stock radio/ cassette deck. My control unit went bad when a couple of buttons went dark and I found a rehabbed unit which I purchased at an internet site. It turns out that my amp went bad too so I gave up on the stock radio and installed a Kenwood stereo/ cassette deck in the stock cassette unit location. I have all these buttons that takes an in-depth study of the manual to change options. You wind up saving a small amount of weight by removing three units to be replaced by one unit. It is nice that the aftermarket supports the stock wiring and plugs which makes the changeover fairly easy. I spliced in a compatible plug to the wiring of the Kenwood stereo and it was about as easy as if it were the stock radio. I just matched the terminals to the proper leads and it was essentially plug-and-play.
