Got The Cab NOW WHAT?

I got a great deal on an ac cab with not rust on it. My question is after I bought it is how do I deal about registration....THat was the only thing I regreted when I purchased my truck...the floors in mine were rotted and not to mention it was a fire truck before so it had wholes drillled on top for the sirens and cb not to mention the spot light, toggle switches (5 to be exact) and countless lil drilled wholes in the dash. That was all there with the typical wear on the cab (door jams and both rear corners) but when I came accross the cab there was #1 untangible that I can not get back....TIME! so I bought because of the time that I would save in bodywork....so can I just swap my my gauges and doors, windows, colum and doors to it bolt on the frame and be done with it....the only thing I'm in need after that is a swb and disk brake conversion with plus a 700 r4, 4/6drop...what's normally done...

I'll assume you didn't get a title with the cab.
You could;
Call the DMV and do what ever they tell you to do IE... lotsa red tape.
Install the cab, say screw it, and run a mismatch title/vin plate. (Impounded if the cops see it)
swap VIN plates, never tell a sole, and live happily ever after

I'd go with option 3( not that I have). You can buy the rosette rivets for about $50/4. Then everything matches and NO RED TAPE. I was afraid the DMV would give me a salvage title and make the truck worthless if I jumped thru their hoops.

Re: Got The Cab NOW WHAT?

I vote for run no VIN tag on the cab. Make em look on the frame, at least this way you can say it didn't have the tag when you bought it. THe worst that can happen then is you get a new VIN assigned. My second vote is to grind the backside of the rivets off, tape over the rivets to the vin plate, use a short punch and hammer to drive the rivets out, insert into new cab with a very carefull job of gluing everything back together, nobody is the wiser. Keep in mind this is a federal felony, so if you get caught, say you bought it that way. (oh, and watch for fingerprints too.)

[edit] Al's post wasnt here when I posted, but ya, getting a salvage title would suck! Breaking the law is up to you. Just lie and say you took care of the problem with the DMV, and DO NOT post what you decided to do, just do it and keep your mouth shut!

Re: Got The Cab NOW WHAT?

dont say a word about changing vin numbers..just make sure you know the rivets are dead on for the way they look..if not big time hassle...here in utah its a major pain in the butt to change out cabs..i had a great 1 ton 4x4 dually given to me with a bad diesel in it..it was an 85. i had a parts truck that was a 3/4 ton,,but wanted the 1 ton title for 1 ton truck..they wanted both titles,,pics of both trucks,,cops to come out and verify they were both there,,and not stolen..i just pulled the dash pads out,, cut about 1 inch around the vin numbers,,rewelded them in the other cabs..smoothed out welds,,put dash pads back on..you cant see them..o just sold the 1 ton..works on newer trucks..but not on ours. what you can do is if you know the other cab is not hot,, you can file for lost title..in utah,,you go to the tag office,,get paper work,,call cops,,they come out run the vin number to make sure its not stolen,,sign off on paper work,, cost 6.00 for new title..not tags,,just title..i did my 60 chevy truck this way..but i had the whole truck to..you might check into this option before breaking any laws..

you mean cut and paste.
I don't condone most laws being broken... but this is a body panel swap.
If you call, an d they start treating you like a criminal or something... ask what about if you were to buy a readily avalible replacement cab... then what? (US body.... fliberglass)

You show them a recipt for the cab, they rivet on a new VIN number, and give you a year based on the VIN they find on the frame, or what the title for the truck says it is.

A felony is a felony...different classes of course.

Federal is only when you do it across state lines. If your state has nice prisons...then take the risk...LOL

Re: Got The Cab NOW WHAT?

Worst case you say you bought the truck that way (after you do the modifications) Just dont leave DNA or fingerprints.
