14 bolt spindle thread problem - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I munched a outer bearing on my 1985 K30 this past weekend. Upon removing the spindle retaining nut and what was left of the bearing race I damaged some threads on the spindle. Now I need to find out what the thread size is so I can find a thread die and clean them up.

After looking through the Pirate4x4 tech site [The 14bolt bible] all I found was this pic and the outer dia. I have tried to clean the threads with a thread file but they need more help before I can put another spindle nut back on.

The threads are 2'' by 16 threads per inch. Dorman numbers 615-130 for the nuts and 618-048 for the inner washer and 618-049 for the lock washer

It is pretty doubtful that you will find a die for this thread. The only thing I have ever seen (and what I always used) was a chasing tool that looks kind of like a C-clamp. It is curved on the anvil end and holds a flat insert that has the thread count that you need. These tools come as a kit that contains several different thread pitches and are adjustable to a wide range of diameters. Because of the key way you cannot rotate it like a traditional die, so you just work it back and forth from that point. They work very well.

This is not the one I have used, but the concept is similar.

I've got dies that large--bought them off the MAC tool truck, they are made specially for just this situation

If the threads are not too bad you can make a thread cleaner out of one of the original nuts. Just cut a few "slots" across the threads with a hacksaw.
(Kind of like the keyway in the axle tube except narrower).
I've had to do this on a few different things when I didn't have access to a die.

If ya want to get fancy you could also heat treat it to harden it. \I don't know much about that though, (yet).

After about 2 hours of careful work I restored it with a thread file. The Snap-On website sells a thread die made for this axle, it's 2"x16 NSF and cost about $19.
I spent $13 on a new 8-way thread file from KND tools.
