Pitman Arm Question

I was planning on swapping the suspension from a 79 parts truck to my 68 so I'll have discs. My question is will the pitman arm from the 79 work with the steering box on my 68?

Re: Pitman Arm Question

It has manual steering. The only problem with swapping the box is that I sold all the AC components off the truck and it looked as though the AC compressor shared a bracket with the PS reservoir. This was the post I read that made me think I couldn't use the box from the '79.

"there is also a difference in the 77-up boxes the steering shaft coming out of the box that hooks to the column get smaller in the 77 up boxes so it will not bolt to your stock steering column (CableGuy0)"

Re: Pitman Arm Question

Sorry not sure on the pitman arm if you are using the 79 center link and tie rods. But get the rag joint for a 77-84 truck. It will bolt to the steering box and your colum. Hope this helps.

Re: Pitman Arm Question

I did this conversion on my 67 a few years ago. When i went to install the steering box it hit the frame before it could be tightened up. I had to cut a section out and weld in a piece I cut out of the donor truck. Just the part with the reliefe. It took a Sat afternoon to do it. I belive they make a bolt in kit for it too.

Re: Pitman Arm Question

Forgot to mention someone told me that someone may have swapped the frame on my truck to a 66.

Re: Pitman Arm Question

You could run the later box and loop the hydraulic lines untill you can come up with a pump. I did that for about a year on my previous 68. It wasn't any harder to steer than the manual box. Just use the later rag joint and it should bolt in.
