Best Sounding Loud Exhaust
As I said in my previous thread, I need to get some exhaust on my truck. My engine is a 383, 10:1, Crower, rollers, hooker headers, ect. Its quite a engine with just under 400 hp. When I was a kid I had header mount cherry bombs on my 1970 Z28 with a similar motor. It sounded pretty cool, but I had some friends with similar rides with the muffllars mounted further back and their cars had more of a rap then mine did. I suspect it was the difference in the tail pipe lenth. Longer the tail pipe = less rap.
I want good rap on my truck. This thing is a toy and I don't want to deny the engine its right to live by making it quiet. My first thought was to install good old "glass packs" at the local exhause shop as they are really just a wide spot in the pipe anyways. I have looked at the expensive mufflars and I really don't see the benefit for a loud application. Does anyone have unbiased first hand advise on a really cool loud sounding exhaust for a hod rod. Thanks Jason |

Re: Best Sounding Loud Exhaust
Dynamax "bullet style" mufflers are cheap, loud and flow like the dickens.
I would not mount them off the headder though. Doing that will hamper exhaust scavaging AND dissapate heat which will slow down your flow. These are basically glorified glass packs but are better quality and sound a little bit better. IMHO |

Re: Best Sounding Loud Exhaust
not to hijack, but anybody try chambered pipes? My brother has flowmaster 40s and they aren't bad, but not really that loud. Flowmaster thrushpower II's sound pretty good.

Re: Best Sounding Loud Exhaust
This is a burn out repost but just in case you didn't see/hear it here it is again. I'm running 50 series delta flows and to me they don't sound too "baffled". I think bullets on this motor would be insanely loud.

Re: Best Sounding Loud Exhaust
The last rig I built I used the Summit fully welded mufflers. They were quiet at idle, but were deep and throaty when you got on it.
Flowmasters are a little tin sounding for my tastes. I hate the way my cherry bombs sound (so do my neighbors) because they have a huge leak at the collector too. <edit> The Summits were cheap and held up very well. Last edited by jimmydean; 12-21-2006 at 07:22 PM. |

I have 3 inch tubing with an "H" pipe, 1 chamber Flowmasters and dumps before the rear axle. Nice and loud with a very good sound.

Re: Best Sounding Loud Exhaust
Go with IMCO 1 chamber mufflers. ($40 for two).
Here is a video of my camaro with the mufflers. http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu...eoid=836332000

Re: Best Sounding Loud Exhaust
My 79 4x4 chevy has headers with 2 1/2 pipes dumping just after the cab with flow 40,s with no tips. Sounds great and really loud when i jump on it. My sister and brother in law say they can here me at the end of the street pulling onto it. My wife hates to drive in it. She says it resonates really bad in the cab.

Re: Best Sounding Loud Exhaust
Ok now I may age date my self but I only know flowmasters as stage 1,2 or 3's and I have used them in every vehical I have ever built. Their shop was about 20min away from were I grew up (santa rosa). I like loude systems for about a week then it just annoyes (sp?) me. So my rule of thumb is this, if you have headers go with a stage 3 and if you have manifolds go with stage 2 and you end up with a nice sound all around. My 67 SS 396 chevelle has stage 3's with headers and all 3" and it sounds great. When my wife heard it fire up and just idle she told me she wanted it Now on my 71 SWB (project slow build) I am also running 3" with sandersons mid length headers and stage 3's as well because my wife said she wants it to sound just like the chevelle. Just my .02 but it has always worked for me in the long run. They sound great at idle, loud when you get on it and when you are just cruising you can talk to the person next to you but people still know you are comming.

I have blockhugger shorties w/ 2.50 piping w/thrasher glasspacks from advance auto for 40 for both dumped before the rear axle. Sounds nice at idle but when i get on it rumbles the hell out of the cab.
