What warning lights should light up?

With the gauge dash, should the dash warning lights light up when the key is in the "on" position (engine off) as most newer cars do? The only light I see is the brake light, which lights when I am starting the engine. I never see the temp light illuminated. I can't remember if there is a light for the oil pressure. Thanks in advance...

Re: What warning lights should light up?

I say all of them. Maybe wrong on the temp light, but the oil pressure light should be on.

Re: What warning lights should light up?

If you have a 'gauge' dash, I assume you have gauges for temp and oil pressure.

There are no warning lights except for the brake light and yours is working correctly.

On a 'idiot light' dash, the oil light is on KOEO. the temp light comes on engine cranking, I believe.

Re: What warning lights should light up?

On my gauge dash, there is a temp light opposite the brake light (I'm not sure whether there is a oil light). I also believe there are 2 temp senders in my engine (original 402). My thought was that one was for the gauge and one was for the light, but maybe I'm incorrect about that. Any other thoughts/opinions?

Re: What warning lights should light up?

the temp light is disabled in a guage panel. That other sensor is for the TCS...transmission controlled spark, a primitive emissions control device that has been disabled on 75% of these trucks.

Is the TCS on the pass or drivers side? When I got my truck the the pass side (what I thought was temp sending unit) was disconnected. I reconnected it. If I disconnect it again will it affect milage or performance?

The passenger side one is the cheesey smog deal.
I've never even seen any remains of the TCS junk... I don't know if simply unplugging it will disable the system.

Re: What warning lights should light up?

You need to bybass it to help fuel mileage.

You need to get vacuum to the distributor advance. Follow the vacuum hose from the TCS solenoid to the carb. Discnnect it there and reconnect another piece of hose. Run that hose to the dist. advance.

You might check the advance for operation by , with KOERing, connect the hose to the advance. If you have vacuum at the end of the hose, and as the hose is connected, the engine speed should increase if the advance diaphram is good.

After you bypass the TCS, you may need to reduce the idle speed.

If your truck is a 71 or 72, (what it looks like on your profile), it will have a wire going to the proportioning valve (off the master cylinder) and one to the parking brake (I think).

I can check with numberoneson's 72 tonite to see for sure with the parking brake.

Re: What warning lights should light up?

67 - 72 has a wire to the prop valve.. or dist valve, which ever your ride has. There was no switch on the parking brake... just the one on the hyd system.

Re: What warning lights should light up?

Thanks Longhorn, I wasn't sure about the parking brake.

Divorced? How long? I haven't visited for a while.

ClassicRed.....the brake light should light up on cranking. If not, try a new bulb.

Re: What warning lights should light up?

yep, I left there, and a few weeks later I got a phone call from a local member, some one didn't get a light I had shipped and was asking if anyone knew where to find me, and I've been back since.
All that is great, it's the future stuff that may be kinda sucky. Might explain more later.
