67 swb small window build thread

Here is pics detailing the build of a 67 small window short wide I built for a guy in 2003. He had started on it several years earlier but had got burnt out on it after completing the chassis and drive train. He had started rust repairs on the cab but after welding in new panel he found the doors didnt fit on the side he completed. I met the guy in 2000 when I saw he had a stripped 71 for sale. He showed me what he had done but told me he had got burnt out. I offered to help him but he wasnt interested at the time.

Shoot forward 3 years later and he calls me out of the blue to come over and build his truck. So I went over and met with him. He was ill at the time and wanted his truck finished. He offered his shop adn equipment to me and told me that money was no object to him. So he hired me and I got to work at the begining of febuary.

Most of the work was involved in the cab. As stated above he had welded the panels in but didnt make sure they were aligned. So I had to cut his stuff out and redo it.

I spent about 2 months on the cab repairing it. Then I turned to the bed. One side was pretty bad and had to be replaced. Also the floor had some rot in it and needed repair.

Most of the build was spent on trying to get the ripples out of the body due to sand blasting all the sheet metal with heavy sand and industrial sand blaster. In fact after spending a week on the origianl hood he told me he decided he wanted a cowl hood so a week was wasted there.

Interior went pretty quickly. Wiring was a pain. We used a painless wiring harness in the truck. First and last time I will ever use one of those harnesses.

Sadly he passed away in august before it was done. Never seeing it completed.

Well his wife gave me to the end of september to finish it. Well it never got done. I never even got to hear it fire. Other than the chassis, drive train, glass and the seat it was all built by me alone with my mom helping every so often.

Im not exactly sure what happened to the truck after his wife sold it in november 03.

Hope you enjoyed the story and the pics.

Thanks for an inspirational story. What I took from this is don't put off doing what you want to do. I bet that the fella would have really enjoyed driving in that truck before passing.

Maybe someday you'll see it in a parking lot, and recognize it.

Re: 67 swb small window build thread

Thanks guys. I keep talking about this truck in other threads and figured I should post the pics and story behind it. Wife shut me down before we got a radio. I was really wanting to hear them to. I didnt even get to hear the engine come to life either! Its a 90's gm color. I think truck but not sure. You can get it in the duplicolor spray bomb but I dont have any paper work left with the code, sorry. Went walking down the paint isle at the parts store and picked that color out. The interior was painted with the spray bomb and cleared. It blended perfectly with the outter color. It was going to be painted the color of the firewall and inner fenders but we agreed after painting them that it was to dark and switched to that color. I looked at my receipt and time books and I put in 543 hours in that truck! That was from 1-20-03 to 9-30-03!

Re: 67 swb small window build thread

I wonder if some people even bother to read the posts?

Sad story

Kinda surprised you didn't try to buy it or trade the $$ owed for the truck itself

If this is in reference to my question I'll explain for you The tach from the pic does not look orignal, so if not what did it come out of? No where in this post did say other than he used painless wireing, and thats not what I asked. I also know It's not his truck and is long gone but wondered if he had saved any other pics of his very nice work? But I thought anyone that read my first reply would figure this out??? guess not, but lets try not to be so harsh on people here.....

Re: 67 swb small window build thread

great story and also great work! Looks like you did a great job at making the hood letters disappear from the time the hood was on the rack to the time it was installed on the truck!

Re: 67 swb small window build thread

Thanks everyone.

The tach I think is a camaro tach. At least that is what I think and from pics posted on the board about installing camaro trachs in our dashes. Im not sure if I have a better pic but I didnt post all of them. Id probably still be uploading pics if I did. lol I will check and see if I got a better pic but I dont think I do.

As for the hood letters. I just set them back in place after painting to make sure they still fit. As it is easier to fix it off the truck then on. I left the v on just cause it fit in there snug while all the others were loose. Just didnt get around to actually mounting them.

As for buying the truck. Didnt have the money and it was really built to his specifications more than mine.
