Re: Hand Throttles
ita a 72, but those are about he only pics I have... I did pull a throttle cable out of a 62 a few years ago, and it was just connected to the throttle lever on the carb.. no twist lock or anything special... it was also on a two wheel drive... go figure... there has to be others on here with better pics...

Re: Hand Throttles
Here is the one that is in my 69 K20
It attaches with a cable that feeds through the silver bracket that you see on the linkage.

Re: Hand Throttles
I used a BMX brake lever on my Toyota. I ran the cable through the firewall and attached it to the carb. I just mounted the brake lever onto my gear shift and could gas and shift with the same hand.
It came in handy when wheeling because it freed up my right leg for brake duties while I worked the clutch with my left. It was so handy I would use it around town.

Re: Hand Throttles
I think the purpose of the hand throttle wasn't for driving around. More for high idle to warm it up or run aux items (winch etc..). any other ideas... I guess it work for the cruise (not the safest)

Re: Hand Throttles
Hand throttle is used with granny low so you can get out of the truck and walk beside for throwing hay bales etc. Lots of farm trucks out here have it.

Any idea where to get the parts? If so many trucks have it. I called around and most don't even know what I am talking about...they think I mean choke!
None of the replacement Bezels even have an opening for them...just lights and wiper on a '70! |

Re: Hand Throttles
all of the 67-68 bezels that I have seen are missing the hole as well. Mine is original so I plan to add my own hole. The "throttle" tab isn't attached, its secured under the nut that holds the cable to the dash bezel. i cantake a pic of my cable as its removed right now....

Re: Hand Throttles
Chevy duty used to cary the handle, probably NOS, but the only location for these now is the boneyards. Big trucks had them more often to work with PTO. They seemed to fail because of poor engineering in the handle mechanism. The cable (solid single steel line) fit into the handle shaft, and a small ball was crimped onto the cable so that the shaft could rotate to make fine adjustments. The ball would come loose, and the handle would no longer control the throttle.
Hand throttles were used on big trucks, so you might look even on any carberated 2-ton. Start with chevy, and work your way out. My father-in-law says they use very similar equipment in aviation. It is possible that an airplane part could be modified to fit our trucks so long as the knob matched no one would ever know that it wan't a chevy part. You know yourself how hard it is to find one to compare to.

Got on here we pulled off of a72, cable type engine throttle, everthing hooks up under the dash and hooks up to the gas pedal somehow.

Re: Hand Throttles
I picked up the Throttle cable, knob and nameplate at a junkyard back in the day, Someday I'll install it under the manual choke on the dash of my '71 Jimmy. I will move the wiper switch over to the left above the headlight switch. This will aproximate a '68 look and I may restore a '68 3-spoke wheel w/ GMC horn button to match. If you look on the back of the plastic dash instrument bezel you will notice vestigial 1" diameter circles where additional switches or cables could be mounted after boring out with 1/2" [~] drill. Even on the '71s and '72s.
I noticed the '67 -'70s that use relay rods on the accelerator to carb linkage had external [engine bay] hookups for the hand throttle. The '71-'72s with the acelerator cable on the carb used some connection under the dash to hand operate the throttle. Some trucks [like my '71 GMC] have a big bracket inside the firewall/ under the dash that has a lot of holes for mounting some kind of accessory. Also called: ,,Mexican Auto Pilot."

Re: Hand Throttles
I wish I could find the cable knob and nameplate because I could fabricate everything else...no junkyard I have talked to, or 67-72 vendor seems to know for sure that they have one though a few are looking. This obviously was not a common option, but it is the only thing I cannot find parts needed to replace. I guess I could use a choke cable and knob, but I still would not have the name plate "throttle". AHHHHHHH! At least quite a few of you know what I am looking for which is alot compared to some of the yards I have called.
