Decision time

I guess it's time to make a couple of decisions with my '58 step side. I already pretty much know what engine, tranny, rear end, tires, wheels, color the and interior is going to be.

I just haven't decided on the front clip. The truck came with a complete Camero clip if i want it. I can't decide between the Camero clip or a front suspension from Fatman's, Heidts, TCI, etc. The Camero clip will have to be rebuilt. That's no big deal. The wife works for a major parts chain so price isn't that much of a factor. Lots of work to install. An aftermarket Mustang type set up will be all new and much easier to install. That's my problem. I trust my welding enough to do rear ends, motor mounts, etc., but not really enough to do a Camero install so that one would have to be farmed out. I could do the aftermarket front end if i took my time, measured often, weld a little, measure...

Then comes the master cylinder. Use the stock pedal set up or go with a firewall mounted set up?

Keep in mind, this will be a daily driver, but i'll enter a local show now and then, so i'm looking for clean, simple and reliable.

Any thoughts?

Decide on the suspension then find the welder. You could most likely get a pro welder for a day at a few hundered bucks. Find someone who does pipeline or heavy equipment. Or tack it up good and drag it to a weld shop.

As for master cyl, thats a personal preference. I have a hydraboost on my firewall. It could just as well go under the cab.

I go with the idea that if your doing what everyone else is doing hide it. If your doing trick stuff put it in plain site. I think on mine if it was just a regular master I would have gone under the cab. I haven't seen to many hydraboosts on 55-59 truck so I put it on the firewal.

you could do the camaro clip and probably come out ahead. go to jalopyjournal.com then click on the HAMB at the top of the page. it is a forum for old car guys. scroll down and there is a thread on camaro clip in a 58 that is awesome. incredible pictures and instructions even i can follow - and am, starting this week.

I'm not sure about your "Task Force" style truck, but on the "Advance Design" trucks, like my '54, the Camaro front end Changes the front end width and forces you to use a certain off set front wheel in order to tuck the wheels back inside the fender. This is on reason I chose the Mudstane II front. Not to mention it's got all new parts to start with aand if you want to bag it, you can.

Camaro vs. Mustang II is really a personal preference. I have a Camaro clip on mine that fits nicely. The pros and cons would be, Mustang II has rack and pinion steering but is much more expensive to do. The Camaro is the less expensive way and you can get parts at any parts store cheap. If I had to pick between the two, I really could go either way. As for the brake set up, I went with the frame mount. I wanted to keep my firewall smooth. I would defiantly replace the stock master cylinder either way with a dual chamber style for safety reasons. By the way, I see you’re from Fresno, which makes you my neighbor since I'm in Clovis.
