700-R4 tail housing trouble
I posted yesterday and I got some of my questions answered; however, I have some left unanswered. I am putting a 454 in my 68 C-10. I am using a 700-R4 and an Early Classic transmission cross member. Problem is this. The tail housing is hitting on the cross member. No problems right, just use a spacer. Well I contacted Early Classic and asked if this problem has ever occurred before and there answer is “never heard of it happening before” why are hundreds of Early Classic customers having an outcome other than mine? I am using the correct 67-71 big block engine mount towers and the correct big block engine mounts. The engine and transmission were only sitting/not bolted down when I noticed the tail housing hitting. Could this have something to do with it? I have since pulled both eng and trans out to collect my thought on this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 700-R4 tail housing trouble
I'm not sure if I understand your question... is it hitting the floor of the cab?
All big block trucks came with a "high hump" floor pan. You can tell if your truck has one by looking at the hump over the transmission. If it is bolted to the floor, you have the correct floor hump. If your floor is one single piece then it's a low hump floor and you should probably put in a high hump floor. If this is your problem I (or another) can elaborate on adding a high hump floor, it's easy.

Re: 700-R4 tail housing trouble
It is hitting on the transmission cross member. The transmission mount is touching the cross member but, so is the tail housing. If I were to tighten the mount bolts it would probably damage/break the tail housing. Does this help at all?

Re: 700-R4 tail housing trouble
I included the pic of the trans mount in the last one. Figured I would include the eng mounts and towers. Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: 700-R4 tail housing trouble
What vehicle did your 700R4 come from? There are 3 different tailshaft housings for a 700R4. The one from the 88-93 C/K pickups should give you the most clearance. The Caprice version has and extra mount built into it and the F-body/Astro Van version has a mount cast into it for the torque arm. The housings are all interchangable... Hope this helps... I will be doing the same swap very soon. Tommorrow, if I get the time & the weather cooperates, I will take some pics for you (I have all 3 under a tarp )

Re: 700-R4 tail housing trouble
I mocked up my drive line w/ sbc and 700r4. Not sure what my tranny came from, but it too was extremely close on my ece crossmember. Less than a 1/16 of an inch. I have been working on sheetmetal, but thought when I get back on the drive line, I would simply put a .250 shim plate under the mount. I don't see a problem with that. Just my opinion.
