bad voltage regulator symptoms?
What are the symtoms of an external bad voltage regulator? I'm trying to figure out what the heck is wrong with my truck. Sometimes it will just crank and crank and crank without even trying the slightest to start. And then the next time it starts right up, but then it will just suddenly die out no matter if it's idleing or in motion. I just replaced the alternator and battery. I checked all connections and wires. Could it be a bad voltage regulator? It has an HEI distributor with MSD igniton.

Sounds like an elecrical short to me. Happened on my old 60 truck, just up and died. Check the hot wire that goes down to the starter. When cold it started and ran fine. When it got warm and expanded, it lost the connection. My mechanic traced it down right away. May not be the answer, but it IS a place to start.

My mistake, mine wouldn't even crank over , so the response about going to the starter was wrong. Sorry. Posted that then reread it and realized that's not it.

The charging system would have nothing to do with starting.
I think you have a messed up ignition system. I'd start with dropping the MSD daeal off and trying the HEI stock and unmodified. |

Yea, sounds like a loose connection to the HEI and/or MSD ignition box. May also be the ignition module in the HEI, not sure if you use one with an MSD box but I have seen them do wierd things, though usually they just stop working.
Now, a bad voltage regulator isn't hard to tell at all.. you'll be driving down the road and all of a sudden your lights will get REAL bright.. and hopefully the stock fusable link will blow, unless your truck is like mine.. if so, you'll melt a whole buncha wires, and blow your battery.
