C-20 rear axle removal

I am putting new wheel cylinders and brake lines in my truck but the axles must come out to get inside the brakes. What exactly do I have to do to take the axles out? Any suggestions or tips?

Thanks in advance

Re: C-20 rear axle removal

JUST DID THIS LAST WEEKEND, AND I DID HAVE TO PULL THE AXELS ON MINE. JACK IT UP AND PULL OFF THE WHEEL. YOU WILL SEE SIX OR EIGHT AXEL BOLTS THERE. PLACE AN OIL PAN BELOW THE BOLTS TO CATCH THE OIL THAT WILL BE RUNNING OUT. REMOVE THE BOLTS AND SLIDE THE AXEL OUT. SPRAY BRAKE CLEANER AROUND THE AXEL BEARING SO YOU CAN SEE BETTER. INSIDE THE HOLE YOU JUST REMOVED THE AXEL FROM, YOU WILL SEE A "STAR" NUT. BEHIND THAT THERE IS A FLANGE WITH TABS ON IT. ONE OF THE TABS IS BENT DOWN INTO THE STAR NUT. WITH A SCREW DRIVER PRY THE TAB UP AND OUT OF THE NUT. THEN TAKE YOUR SCREW DRIVER ALONG WITH A HAMMER AND TAP THE STAR NUT COUNTER CLOCKWISE. THEN IT WILL TURN PRETTY EASY SO THEN JUST TURN WITH YOUR SCREW DRIVER. FIRST WILL COME THE NUT, THEN THE FLAGE WITH THE TABS ON IT, THEN A LARGE WASHER. KEEP EVERYTHING IN ORDER. AFTER THAT IT WILL ALL COME OFF EASILY. AS FOR THE WHEEL CYLINDERS, THERE ARE TWO BOLTS HOLDING IT IN. ONE IS EASY TO GET TO. IT COMES OUT. THE OTHER IS HARD TO GET TO. IT DOES NOT COME OUT. IT HAS BEEN SLID DOWN INTO A SLOT. JUST TAKE A PRY BAR OR A PRY BAR AND HAMMER, AND PRY IT UPWARD. IT WILL COME OUT WITH A BIT OF ENCOURAGEMENT. THEN JUST REVERSE ORDER PUTTING THINGS BACK TOGETHER, JUST DON'T FORGET TO BEND THAT TAB BACK DOWN OR YOUR WHEEL MIGHT END UP ON SOMEBODY ELSES CAR! HOPE THIS HELPS! IT'S NOT TOO HARD ONCE YOU FIGURE IT ALL OUT. SIDE 2 WILL BE MUCH EASIER THAN SIDE 1! GOOD LUCK

Re: C-20 rear axle removal

Thanks guys. I ended up going out and pulling the axles right after I made this thread. I just walked out there and thought, "I bet all I have to do is take those bolts out..."

Re: C-20 rear axle removal

personally i like the Haynes manuals, because they have lots of pictures...

Cost $14 at your local parts store.
It's the first thing i buy when i get a new vehicle. I must have 15 different manuals now.
