go to a title company and ask for info on the property. using the neighbors addresses for refrence. it will have the owner name and address as to where to send tax bill to. they most likely wont charge you. but it should cost no more then a $20 spot.

they did... unfortunatly that was about 10 years or more ago, and all the tarps have since disintegrated.

Recently, hot rod magazine has been showing photos similar to these pic's in various locations. They also often include stories behind the rotting vehicles such as the "not for sale" and "i am going to restore all of them next year".
I think Chip Foose has made a statement to the effect that the hobby is loosing some great cars to situations similar to this.

Most of the time the owners of these rotting collections have some self image problems and to compensate for various personal shortcomings, they like to take pleasure in thinking they have some possessions that others want to own. Often times they would rather remain in poverty with the idea that others want their rotting vehicles.

Well,I would take all the vehicles,sell the few I dont want,and keep and gradually fix up the rest...

Ok, you absolutely have to follow up on this...get in contact with someone..somewhere..even if you get the ole "there not for sale" crap!..

There are alot of people doing that now...due to all the car shows and the BJ auctions...now everybody who's got something that's over 20 years old, thinks its worth a pot of GOLD!!!

if you have the address you can go to the "clerks office" in the town hall and look up the deed etc - you can back track to see if there are any leins on the property as well

Of just put in an anonymous complaint to the town that the dude has a ton of unregistered vehicles in his yard that they aren't getting property tax for then kindly show up on his door a few days later and ask if they are for sale

From what I have seen in similar circumstances, chances are this is a situation that the city/county is dealing with. I saw some homes in the background, so I think we can we assume there is a zoning violation. At the least there is an environmental violation going on due to the size and condition of the collection. I'm starting to sound all preachy and tree-huggy. But knowing how cherished all those vehicles are it is a shame not to put some effort into rescuing them. If you need help negotiating the beurocracy, I'd love to put my skills to use.

It could be several things if is been comdemmed and the locals clean it up everything will be scraped. A old yard was cleaned up close to me. Old stuff everwhere!!! 55-57 Chevys,40's coupes, even some hemi's. All hauled to the crusher. Sad!!!

Be careful what you wish for. Getting a city/county office or zoning involved to put pressure on the old fart to sell might backfire big time. faced with the expense to clean up, instead of selling the vehicles it might be easier just to roll in a truck and carry that stuff to the crusher.

I'd vote for flashing cash at them. Some of these people are just not right in the head and they hoard stuff. Some hoard small things like baseball cards while others gather up old cars. They found/collected each one for a reason and they are justified in their own mind to keep the collection complete. Add to the mix some vandalism where things are damaged/stolen and trust in others is lost. All they think you want to do when you offer to buy one is break up the set. sometimes the only way to get in is buy the whole lot. Yes you bet they think they are sitting on a gold mine. This may be morbid, but you might be better off waiting for the old fart to croak and deal with the estate that has the challenge of dealing with the mess. Just depends if the iron doesn't fall completely apart before the dude is pushing up daisys.

Two examples. One of my dad's buddies from the Nomad club had a absolutly giant collection of 55-57 chevies up in Wyoming. Dry air, meant we are talking pristine sheetmetal. Nomads, convertibles, 2dr hardtops, sedans wagons, you name it he had 3 of each or more for each year. You could see it from I-25 and you bet he got constant calls and knocks on the door. He didn't part them, but would build one every couple of years. The market on tri 5 chevies started to climb and he finally considered selling. Not one but the whole yard full. Asking price was a cool million. Dad thought he was nuts. It took a couple of years but a couple of dudes from back east paid him what he wanted.

Next was the guy in Wisconsin. AKA dumster don. Hot Rod and Hemmings had a big write up on his stash. This guy collected chevy speed parts/engines/trannies and complete cars. Used to have them in a basement of a John Deere dealer and moved it all to semi trailers after the dealer closed. somebody ripped him off out of one of the trailers so he proceeded to spread the trailers around the town he was in, weld the doors shut, park them tail to tail and then let the air out of the tires. Something like a dozen in all. It was something like urban legend to local gearheads until after dumpster don passed on. One lucky guy made a deal with the estate to buy the trailers based on opening them. Something like a million. Stash included a couple of 57 FI vettes, 63 and 67 vettes, two ss454 70 chevelles, 69 yenko camaro, 70 z28 and a few others. over 100 vintage hi-po big blocks, hi-po small blocks, stacks of cranks, heads, intakes, carbs, FI sets, 4 speeds and other treasure. The guy cataloged it and sold it for stupid money in the 8 figure range.

stories like this don't help the average builder that just wants one or two out of the bunch.
