tming issues

how many degrees of timing should i set my 454 to?? here is the set up,1994 454 gen 5 converted to carburetor with an eddie mani and carb with an HEI dizzy. my book says to set it to 4 degrees btdc, but since the whole set up has changed, then i'm not sure if to set it to the fuel injection set up. I JUST got finished with the swap, so i want to gt it running properly asap. thanx a lot

if im not mistaking it was of a 1994 2500 p/u.
it has a eddie performer 2-0
750 cfm carb
carter fuel pump, (since the block cannot accept a mechanical one due to tbi)
the whole serpentine belt assembly
internal voltage regulator conversion
dual bolt patern hughes performance flexpate
HEI assembly.
and a electric fan assebly
i am still runing the th350. i hope it dont brake, it has never been rebuilt and its not designed to handle much power stock. plus i owe my dad quite a bit of money since i used all mine up in the fuel set up pretty much lol.

i found a picture of my old motor. it was and old and tired 307. i took it with my phonw thats why is a little blurry

Re: tming issues

Re: tming issues

you can never go wrong with power timing, this way you get the max adv that the motor wants without guessing. Max adv=max hp

Re: tming issues

The simple answer is to set to whatever initial timing is required to get 36 degrees total advance (initial + mechanical advance) at < 3000 RPM. You can then tune the vacuum advance. I posted an attachment in this forum that details the process. This a proven approach for max power and driveability.

"Power timing" will always be far too advanced.

Re: tming issues

But Billla, what is to much timing when you say a smallblock can have 52 degrees advance? When it pings, its to much timing, no ping its good
