Separating the steering column from the shaft?
I am in the process of swapping the three speed manual column in my 69 GMC for another 3 speed manual column that I picked up at a wreckers.
I have everything loose and free, but I can't get the splined shaft off the steering column. Any hints or tricks?

there is a bolt in the coupler that has to come out i spented 4 hour the other week trying to remopve mine before i found this out the bolts in the couplers have to come all the way out

I have the coupler bolt right out, but it is still stuck. I had looked at my replacement and saw that the shaft had a small flat section, but not all the way to the end.
What did you do after the bolt came out?

i use a wedge chisel to spread the coupler to remove the splined shaft

The coupler seems loose, but the shaft will not come out.
Is the end of the shaft spring loaded?

when i replaced my column the shaft was one piece fron the rag joint to the steering wheel nut i pulled the whole thing through the dash (from the rag joint up) then i put my new tilt next to the old one and cut the steel shaft how long i needed it and then bought a u joint to conncet it

It's out, thanks everyone.
I ended up removing the intermediate shaft at the steering box and taking it out as a unit. Once on the bench a small pry bar was all it took to separate the two. Now to get the new one back it......
