POR15 Is it worth the $$$$

The more I read about POR15 I like it but, you seem to have to buy the sealer to preserve the life of POR15 and that isn't cheep either. Does anybosy out there have any experience with this product? Can you spray it or brush it on? I am thinking of putting it on the interior of my bed I have some minor surface rust that I would like to use it on. Any thoughts or Ideas?

Re: POR15 Is it worth the $$$$

You need to top coat it. Use a brush so you don't waste it and then shoot a color over it.

It is not UV resistant, so you can't just paint it on and leave it exposed. On your frame or under the carpet (like mine) you are fine, but you don't want it exposed to direct sunlight.

Re: POR15 Is it worth the $$$$

So you would paint it on and top coat it and then paint over the top coat? I thought about doing a rino liner. Would it work on this type of application?

Just a top coat to cover the POR15.

Rhino Liner would be a good option. That is my plan this summer. I am treating all my bad spots, then shooting the bed. Should be sweet.

Re: POR15 Is it worth the $$$$

I found this a few years ago and have never looked back. In my humble opinion, forget POR, use this:
www.rustbullet.com

While I don't have any pics, I did just use this on the inside of my front fender cause it has a little surface rust starting to build on the inside near the radiator. I also plan on using this on the entire frame (and anything else that isn't nailed down).
When I first got it I did an old Axe head and left it out in the weather for a year. Still sharp and still rust free to this day. This stuff is THE S*%T!!!

You can sand it and paint over it all day long. Check out the web-site.
You won't be disappointed.

Re: POR15 Is it worth the $$$$

i used the rust bullet on my suspension parts and cab floor. i dont have any proof of how long it lasts but im happy with it so far. its a lot easier to apply than por 15. you just clean the dirt and grease off and brush or spray it on. make sure you wear rubber gloves and dont get it on you cause you cant get it off if it dries. i wore it on my hands and arms for bout 2 weeks
it looks real good when sprayed and its tuff as nails almost like powdercoat.

Re: POR15 Is it worth the $$$$

Whether or not its worth it, I was talking to a guy who has a shop by me and he referred to POR 15 as "paint over repeatedly." He said Tractor Supply has some paint called implement paint or something like that and it works better for a fraction of the cost.

Actually, here's a link:

Re: POR15 Is it worth the $$$$

Thumbs down on POR, go for something like Eastwood Rust Encapsulator. If you have to go through all the trouble of topcoating as well so it doesnt look like crap after a while (like mine), then its not worth it.

Re: POR15 Is it worth the $$$$

i used por on my chassis when i redid it. i am happy with the outcome i did. it is a little pricy though. i would imagine that all the stuff mentioned above would probably work for what you want. i had just went down to my local paint supply house & that is what they recommended to me. though for sure you want to use gloves & mask when using, especially if you spray. if you spray it better make sure that you cover everything that you don't want black!!!

good luck!!!

Re: POR15 Is it worth the $$$$

I guess I never think about the price since I get it at cost. I have been real happy with POR15 since I am painting over it anyway. I've been using it for over a year now with great results.

I have had bad luck with just about every product I have used from Eastwood. Not only is the stuff overpriced, but a lot of it is junk.

They charge $9 for 8oz of powder when I get it for $5 a pound! I get specialty blends for $10 (you should see my 24k gold metal flake clear, it's awesome).

Re: POR15 Is it worth the $$$$

Right now I have some stuff called Jasco. I have heard it is good stuff and will never allow the medal to rust again you just have to spray a primer over it. Anyone ever used Jasco?

Re: POR15 Is it worth the $$$$

I used POR on the underside of my Caprice hood 7 or 8 years ago, and it still looks like new.....

But, I checked out the Rust Bullet site, and the next project I get working on, I'll give that a try!

Re: POR15 Is it worth the $$$$

I've used POR15 as well, on my core support, inside fender wells.. buy cheap brushes and wear latex gloves and throw them away, but seemed to work well for me.. just got to finish putting the truck back together now.

Re: POR15 Is it worth the $$$$

I called rustbullet up a couple of months ago to ask about their product and the lady asked if I would like to try a sample. I told her sure, so she asks me for my address, I give it to her and she tells me she's sending me a pint of it out for me to try. A week later I get TWO QUARTS, one silver and another the new Black Shell, with a note asking me to try out their new black product on anything I want. Just to write them or e-mail them back with my opinion of their products. That right there sold me. I've used the black on part of my cab and so far so good. Looks like an excelent product. But my trucks half torn apart, and will be awhile till it's back together again. Painted a old rim with the silver (just knocked the rust off with scotch brite) and it's been sitting outside in the rain and sun for about 5 weeks now. Looks just like it did when I painted it.

Re: POR15 Is it worth the $$$$

I am with Jimmydean on the Eastwood rust products. I will be starting on painting a frame soon, I have not decided what to use yet, but for sure it will not be Eastwood. I used Eastwood on a fuel tank that is showing rust through the paint less than six moths.

Re: POR15 Is it worth the $$$$

I'm gonna try this:

http://www2.sherwin-williams.com/che...ctPolaneHS.asp

If it's good enough for Caterpillar, it should hold well on a frame. And much cheaper than POR15.

Re: POR15 Is it worth the $$$$

Only use POR15 in a well ventilated area. One board member almost died when he sprayed it. He broke out in a fever, had a rash and was sick. As far as it lasting: I put some on my truck floor 2 years ago. I did it in my buddy's shop and spilled a couple drops on the shop floor. The spots are still there on the concrete and will probably always be there. I bought a quart and it took a long time to use it up. It has to be refrigerated once open. It goes a long way. I top coat mine with Rustoleum, seems to work good.

Re: POR15 Is it worth the $$$$

Can't spray it unless you have a "Fresh-Air Mask" - POR has ISOCYNATES or whatever in it = very bad to breathe in. I actually sprayed some without knowning that - I wore a regular mask and had no ill effects but it was in a well ventilated area.

Then as stated before you have to paint over it with thier Top-Coat and all this money making B.S.

(However I do like POR Engine Enamel, and that can be sprayed as it is just regular enamel with a high solids base to it)

That Rust Bullet Stuff looks like something I would try. And you can paint right over it!!!

Re: POR15 Is it worth the $$$$

i've been using POR15 for many years and have found best results with painting it then while its still slightly tacky spraying my finish coat on . i get excellent adhesion that way i usually use an enamel for my finish coat

eastwood stuff is just overpriced rebranded brandX/ they dont manufacture anything
