question for the 4x4 guys

so i was in a parking lot today and on one side of me was a huge lifted newer truck with all the custom lights and bumpers and chrome it had huge tires with off road tread and nice chrome wheels.
on the other side was a brand new toyota tacoma with all the same type of stuff on it, the nice wheels with lots of tread, roll bars, lights, grill gaurd, wentch and all the other goodies.

what i dont get is why people buy these trucks and put all the extras on them and they never see dirt. i mean come on i live in seattle washington.
i had an 81 toyota 4x4 and it was built for the trails but it was always dirty. these trucks didnt have a spec on mud on them

so my question is. thoes of you who are building 4x4s are you gunna drive them like there built or is it all for the tough look??

I don't put up with 4.56 gears, no overdrive, locker, and bone jarring suspension to sit in a parking lot.

Re: question for the 4x4 guys

My K10 has never even been down my father's gravel driveway! It's a 4x4 so I lifted it a bit because that's how I wanted it to look.

I also have a Jeep TJ that has been lifted and it has never left the pavement although I built it to handle the abuse if I ever decided to use it that way. This thing has never even had the top off of it.

I have a response for people who ask why I have 4x4s that don't leave the pavement but it isn't fit to post here.

Re: question for the 4x4 guys

my question for you 2WD guys is why do you put in chrome bed strips and polished oak wood if you are never gonna haul as much as a pillow in your truck?..the answer is "becuase we like it like that!" Same thing for the 4WD drive guys.

The real question is: Why does the soccer mom drive a 4WD $60K Escalade to the mall and playgroup? That I can't answer

Re: question for the 4x4 guys

Some are built for go and some are built for show. How many of us have pickups that will never see another load hauled in the bed? It's all in what you want to build. If you want it to look good, or work good. Doesn't matter as long as you are happy with it.

I wouldn't lead SeeTen's pickup or his TJ down any of the trails I've been on where body damage is almost definite. Doe that mean that it is any less of a 4x4 than my crawler is? I wouldn't take my lifted 1 ton crew cab diesel pickup into places where I've had my Bronco, but it's not built for that. I've had it on a few trails, but it is mainly used to pull, haul and work. And it works great for that purpose.

Re: question for the 4x4 guys

My 69 4x4 has spent more miles off road, in the mud and under water here in S. Florida than it has on the street. But, now I am going to finally restore it and it may not leave the road again; "I don't think"!
I am going to keep the 17/40 Ground Hawgs on it though!!!

Size: 52.7 KBI wheel mine, but not to the exteme. I've had it over several 13,000 ft+ passes and to Moab, Utah plus elk hunting at 10,000 ft. in November. that's why it has a T-case and front axle otherwise it would have been a 2wd. I don't want a poser! (check my avatar) I don't need the money not being used.

Re: question for the 4x4 guys

I don't buy a truck for it to be a showpiece road-queen, I buy it to work it hard, and play it even HARDER.

6872xtc, is that your truck in your avatar?? Thats an awesome pic.

Re: question for the 4x4 guys

We live in america. DO what you want, When you want.
Ive seen guys with built up jeeps, go wheeling, be very careful have rock rails and they think they got it covered from body damage till they slide on that one log into a tree and blow out the side window of there top.

If ya got the money to build a nice truck and show it off on the street. Then more power to you. If you really wanna play then go buy a ratbox and beat it to death and have all the stories of how that dent got in the fender pulling that ford out of a 4ft deep hole.

Re: question for the 4x4 guys

May be lifted and have 35s but it wont see the trails....Ok,maybe once before its painted. The reason it is like it is,6" lift and 35s....well thats cause I like it that way.I dont like stock height trucks, and especially dont like lowered trucks.Thats my style, lifted 4x4s

Re: question for the 4x4 guys

Ive had my 4x4 for over 10 years and its never even had the front drive shaft on it, Im not even sure if I know where it is anymore Course its no beauty queen so if it was to go off road it wouldn't make a difference.

Re: question for the 4x4 guys

I don't think I'll get mine dirty when(ever) I finish her... Came with 33s though! Too bad the Rockwell T case is stuck in 4Hi and the front axle is toast (PO didn't match ratios when he put in a disc axle) I don't want to beat up all the hard work I am doing/will do, plus the production numbers were low (<2800) for the 67 4x4s... according to a few books I have checked at the library; each one has a different figure.

but that is going to change with the warmer weather. Except for the blizzard this weekend. Ah, 'Spring in the Rockies!'
But yeah, I don't get why folks will spend SO MUCH on good rubber and lifts and lights and fender flares just to use it up on pavement. There's a bunch of those types around here and I usually yell "EVER GET IT DIRTY???" at them. I'd buy a beater to beat instead of wasting money on posing. Oh well, it's only money, right? Maybe I'm just jealous...

ok. well i understand that ypu guys dont want to beat up yer nice restored rides! but i just dont get why people do it to brand new trucks? i mean yeah it looks cool and all but isnt it a waste of money to buy all that stuff and never use it?

i guess that i just feel that a truck (or car) should be driven how its built.
and i dont mean to offend anyone

Re: question for the 4x4 guys

This thread doesn`t belong in 67-72 trucks. The question was based on two newish trucks with all the offroad accessories that won`t see dirt. That`s just prople with more money than sense.
Now,as far as a 67-72 4wd that is as clean and straight as one of those 21st century 4wds goes...It`s restored to be as nice or nicer than the day it was new.If the owner is hesitant to go out and beat it,I understand.

The majority of the trucks your referring to wouldn't make it out wheeling anyway, their only show pieces.

It's all about priorities.

I'm lucky enough to have my cake and eat it too.
From trailer queen to full on crawler and everything in between.

Why do people buy Saleens,Ferraris,Vipers,Vettes...just to stay below 70 mph?Why do people drive dual wheel diesel crewcabs to office jobs?
