Finally got my computer hooked up at home. since Feb I've been working here and there on my old 67. I bought this a few years back. I put a windshield in it and tuned it up as best as I could. The past year I was in Laredo and decided when I got back I'd try some more things to get it back on the road. The motor ran much better than when I had bought it but still had a miss. After spending the afternoon and pulling the head I found out why. No. 5's valve seat was bad.

The truck has 196K on it and was bought new in the neighboring town. I'm 100 miles away from it so I dont get to work on it as much as I'd like to. It didn't really smoke and didn't leak oil so I thought why not see what it will be like with just a valve job.

I got it back together and its running much better. I got an Hei for it. I got it put in but haven't got it started yet. I ran out of day light.

Im going to have the stock steel wheels, bumpers sand blasted painted white and run 68 nova dog dish caps on it and do some front end work too. I want to be cruising it for our town annual main street drag at the begining of June.

6cyl heads are not cheap to rebuild!! BTW.

I robbed the grille of this old 68. Going back for the radio delete plated and cowl.

Memory lane time for me.

My very first truck was a worn out old stepside 61 Apache (orange w/black fenders, subsequently overpainted in coppertone) that used to be a Fla. State Road Dept vehicle. Bought it for $100 in '73. It had a straight six that came in a basket with a single barrel carb. I did (34 years ago) much as you're doing now.

Once running I beat the hell out of it. Drove it 3,000 miles R/T (Fla to Mich & Return) at 10MPG.

Then I upgraded to a 283, 4 barrel and Military style tires and played off road for a few years. God that truck was fun. If it weren't so butt ugly, I'd love to have it back.

DIdnt do much this summer to the truck. Then, last wk end I put an HEI out of a 80 chevy van with a 250. I think my points distributor was worn out. Didnt time it by a light but will say from driving it the hesitation is gone now and I have that neat 6cylinder sound.(turbo muffler coming out by the rear wheel) I plan on fixing the heater controls, putting in duct works for def and getting this thing ready to use this fall. reapainting the bumpers, wheels white along with grille trim pieces.
I think my 3 speed is out of a later truck because I can down shift to first while moving, if it had the nonsynchro older tranny it would grind doing that.

Im getting that truck. The older man who has it was so happy I got him a carb kit for his riding mower he said I could come haul it off. Its pretty rough. last tagged in 85' he found it in a ditch. I will let you know what I find on it. david

and this week end I got the grille and headlight bezels ready. Came out pretty good for rattle can. I had one out of a 68 the chrome trim but I wanted to put it back original. The previouse owner robbed the grille for this gmc project and put on a gmc hood had 4 headlights and 2 working. LOL NOw she's got new teeth. LOL
