My newly acquired 71' disc front end was 35+ plus years dirty, of course and has now been completely taken apart and is soaking in Oven cleaner...again. I think I have used 4 cans. All the MOOG control arms and ball joints have been ordered from Rock Auto. The crossmember and all 4 A arms are going into the HOT TANK tomorrow morning. I really didn't have to use the oven cleaner because it's all going in the HOT TANK...but I wanted to clean it up some, just me.

OK ...LOL... I guess I gotta get some paint on this new front end in order to get a responce, LOL! Right across from my Bed Liner shop is a machine shop...just walked over and lowered the 5 front end pieces into the hot tank...he says they will be sparkley clean by the morning.

Rust Bullet and their top shell black chassis paint were ordered today!

Parts came out of the HOT TANK nice and clean and while I am waiting on the Rust Bullet paint to arrive, I couldn't help myself and covered all the parts in Navel Jelly to start killiing all the rust. Rust Bullet paint says you don't need to do this, but I wanted to....so there! LOL!

I thought you guys would like this picture!!! Process has been:
1) oven cleaner soak
2) Scrape off as much as I can
3)Hot Tank
4) Navel Jelly Neutralizer
5) Extra Hot cycle in the dishwasher

Next:
Spraying 3 coats of Rust Bullet silver metalic rust paint. Then spraying their top Black Shell coat. Crossmember is to be pressure blasted tomorrow to remove all Navel Jelly residue....it won't fit in the dishwasher, LOL! Pic is lower A arms just going in. The uppers just came out and man are they clean!

I was just told that I would die a horrible fiery death if I ever put my truck parts in the dishwasher. How did you ever convince your better half to let you do that?

I just did it! The deal was I clean the dishwasher or buy a new one if I break it. No problem! They were not nasty dirty just had navel jelly on them. I told her it was just to get the navel jelly off. Oh man are they ready for paint now!!!

Here they are now out of the dishwasher: Dark spots are last bit of water drying.

It doesn't if you want it to stay metalic silver. My 71' has a silver frame and everything that was black is silver. This next one will be a black frame...so hence...topped with Rust Bullets Black Shell gloss chassis paint.

This is Over Kill, I wonder how much time you spend doing all these steps to get it clean. Why not just have it media blasted. You probably could fit it in the beat blaster at the mashine shop across the street. Time is money!

Well that's your opinion, which you are certainly entitled to. Overkill...but then that's just one newbie PINKIE opinion....and Air Bags and 20's , C notches, and Tubular A arms and electric exhaust cuts....and all that stuff is Overkill too...now isn't it, LOL!!! I didn't have access to a media blaster. Hot tank was 25 steps from my shop and machine shop didn't have time until next week to do any other work on my stuff other than use of the hot tank. All this was done in my spare time, it's a hobby and I don't equate my hobby time or spare time to money. If you think this is overkill...you probably better skip looking at my 67'/68' build thread,, coming shortly.

Hey...and lets get some perspective here...

Acquiring nice but dirty Front end = $150
All new Moog control arm shafts and ball joints = $300 Plus
ECE 2.5" drop spindals = $200 Plus
ECE 2" drop front springs= $110
Quart Rust Bullet paint and Black Top Shell = $80
New slotted/Cross drilled rotors and wheel bearings= $100 Plus
New Moog Tie rods= $100 Plus
New disc brake lines= $50

You add it up....and you don't think I want it as clean as I can get it??? LOL!

Cool tip Richard H! Thank you! And I loved the pic of cooking headers in the kitchen stove, your wife must be cool like mine!!! This Rust Bullet paint says you can paint right over rust, which is fine. I don't have the 67' or 68' truck here yet but I want to get this 71' disc front all t!ts and ready to bolt on the SWB truck/frame when I find it. So...I did all the necessary or "overKill" steps that were easily available to me. Here is the crossmember that went thru all the "overkill" steps but was pressure blasted....(it wouldn't ft in the dishwasher), LOL! Now I feel comfortable about painting.

1st experience with Rust Bullet. Followed the instructions and thought I would test out one of the uppers with a brush. Paint looks super durable and brushed on with no problems...but left brush strokes, which I am not happy with so I will be sanding this one a bit and spraying the stuff next through an HVLP gravity feed gun. Here is the test brushed upper A arm, you can see the brush strokes.

Alex, how do you think that stuff would go on with one of those foam brushes? That might not leave any bristle streaks....

Do you have a line on any other SWB trucks yet?? Can't wait to see this build go together!!

I have two other swb's to look at one 67' and one 68', one is in Brighton, CO and the other is in Denver. Maybe maybe...don't know yet. Not going to rush buying the truck, going to take my time and buy the most rust free truck within my price range.

Foam brush....I will try that too.

I just chizzled off the crud, replaced the bushings, ball joints, etc. and off I went. But you can get away with that kind of stuff in dry Arizona!
