Give me your input on a bed tool box/gas filler cover.
Ok if you have been following project Low Buck then you know we are finishing up the bed mods so the rear frame can be complete and get back on the road. I installed a fuel filler door and down tube from a mazda miata and now I need to cover the filler neck in the bed. I spent some time looking at different ways of doing this then I thought why not make it usefull at the same time. This truck is our new shop truck / light duty tow vehical so I will need tie downs, tow strap, misc hand tools and spare oil ect. What do you think about small tool boxes in the bed that are out of the way for hauling 4x8 sheets of ply wood, metal and also below the top of the wheel tubs for larger items. I was thinking of doing 2-4 of them depending on what I think I will need on the road. The boxes wil have lockable lids and be welded in to the bed then line-x'ed after paint. What are your thoughts or ideas good or bad but if bad then let me know why!
Thanks for the input. Kevin LFD Inc. |

Re: Give me your input on a bed tool box/gas filler cover.
I'm thinking you should bring it up level with the top of the fuel neck and then you would have dry storage.
EDIT: Is the top of the fuel neck even with the wheel tub?

Cool idea !! need a box on each side to "balance out the look, and i agree i think it needs to be a little taller to hide the filler neck completely.

Re: Give me your input on a bed tool box/gas filler cover.
It started off that high but with it being on the narrow side the door would have been real small to clear the bed rail. This way my opening wil be almost 9" accross instead of only 6" if the box was taller. I will have the fill neck covered with a seperate cover so it still be close to dry storage. The door on this one will start just after the filler and come to just inside the gate post. Yes their would be atleast two of them if not four to keep things balanced
Oh and the top of the filler is about 2" above the wheel well but that is were it needed to be for the right shape on the out side door. Kevin LFD Inc. Last edited by Rokcrln; 05-09-2007 at 10:32 PM. |

Very cool. That cleans up the filler neck nicely.

Rok, come out even with the wheel tubs, how would that look? Would make it look a little cleaner I think. Good idea though. I always thought I was too cool to have a tool box in my truck but my daily driver has a flush mount diamond plate box and wouldn't live without it now.

I would make it even the the wheel wells in width and then just a little higher than the filler neck where it is even with that line drawn on there. It would make it a lot cleaner and weather proof. Nice idea though.

Re: Give me your input on a bed tool box/gas filler cover.
you could make the top of the box just above the neck and bring it out just enough to clear the neck and then make a slanted lid forit. do this on the rear ones and make the fronts like you have them now. just a thought

It looks great and I think it will work great as long as you seal around the filler neck. I love the low buck build!
